Films vs. Movies

How can I know the difference?
>>
Hello Reddit.
>>
>>63443550
You don't. If you can't just enjoy whatever you're watching because you're wondering whether it's a 'film or a movie' then the shitposters of this board have won.
>>
>>63443550

If you like it, its a flick, because you are a pleb.

Everything else is either a film or a movie.
>>
>>63443550
if you actually have these meme thoughts in your everyday life then it's over man just kill yourself

Reddit: The opinion
>>
>>63443582
So we're supposed to dislike films and movies?
>>
>>63443550

If its pretentious as fuck with a foreign sounding title and director, its a film.

If its full of CGI and fart jokes its a movie.
>>
What about motion pictures?
>>
>>63443603

No, we are not you frogposter.

Movies are the ones discussed on /tv/.

Films are the ones derailed within two posts by /pol/.

>>
>>63443550
Films innovate and are often amazingly well made and tell a great story

Movies are well done entertainment that have some flaws

Flicks are fast paced films, usually flashy that don't try too hard, often b-movies are flicks.

It's all about not being autistic to understand the difference.
>>
>tfw french
>tfw we only have one word for film

dumb frogposter
>>
>>63443789
is it film?

>>63443789
cinéma, cinématographe, cinérama, cinoche, projection, spectacle

Yes

>>63443806
None of those words mean film as in "a film" though
>>
>>63443774

Yes but you have to be autistic enough to care.

What a Catch 22 we have.
>>
>>63443806
not a single one applies

Movies are made using a formula (favorite formula for this is Blake Snyder's BS2), focus groups, studio interferences, multi-pandering to different groups, etc.

Films are made by artists. They aren't about the money as much as movies are. They're about stories, characters, cinematographie, etc.

For example:

Movie: will use a cgi shot in the movie, not because it is needed, but because thy have a contractual obligation with a cgi studio

Film: will use a cgi shot if the story demands it. If the look of the shot is what the filmakers want in their film.
>>
>>63443582
Then what is cinéma and kinography?

You're a frog posting pleb, so if you like it, it's a movie, and if you don't, it's actually good and meaningful like film.
>>
>>63444021
Fucking this. I don't know why people can't grasp the concept that different "motion pictures" are made with different methods and objectives in mind.

The stuff you like are movies.
The stuff reddit likes are flicks.
The stuff /tv/ likes are films.
TDKR is kino.

Probably The Lone Ranger. Real good flim-flack...not a very good film, though...and almost a decent Flickle-Flam.

Film = Made completely for art.
Movie = Mid point. Some artistic and some entertainment elements, usually leaning more on entertaimment.
Flick = Made completely for entertainment.
>>
>>63444533
There can only be one, Trips McDubstein.

You can't have more than one favorite in any given categorie.
>>
>>63444601
why would you watch something which wasn't entertaining?
>>
>>63444632
literally reddit
>>
>>63444601
By entertainment, you mean money, right?
>>
>>63443550
Film: Persona
Movie: Fight Club

Film: Perfect Blue
Movie: Dark Swan

Any other examples?
>>
>>63444632
Because you respect art. It's rare that I can stomach watching anything that was made to entertain. Nothing makes me angrier that cinema that tries to pander to me.
>>
>>63444660
so all films are not entertaining by default? i am sorry but i fail to see why somebody would watch something they are not interested in
>>
What speed to you watch at? 0.8x for cinema and 0.7x for kino here.
>>
>>63444632
Because. The human experience is much more than "what feels good right now."

You could watch to educate yourself, to learn about other point of views, perspectives, experiences. They don't have to be entertaining to be gratifying.
>>
>>63444670
Entertainment leads to money.
>>
>>63443550
If you are hipster and just a touch mimetic then films otherwise movies
>>
>>63444678
>Dark Swan
Black Swan. And it's a flick.
>>
>>63444632
There can be entertainment within fully artistic projects

See: Renoir, Truffaut and Chaplin
>>
>>63443550
There is none. It's all just a circle-jerk, tbqh.
>>
>>63444721
i've watched entertaining films which made me feel like shit/uncomfortable whilst watching it. if i were to watch something which was boring, i wouldn't watch it.

i spend most of my time watching documentaries, i watch them because they're entertaining. i would not watch a documentary if it was boring as fuck, and if you do, then lol
>>
>>63444765
>i've watched entertaining films which made me feel like shit/uncomfortable whilst watching it
No, those were movies. If it was a film they would have removed the "entertainment sensibility" elements and committed fully to the antagonization and discomfort.
>>
>>63444765
You have ADHD.

Bored? Fucking grow up.
>>
>>63444765
Well, of course you watch entertaining documentaries. It's like this:

Investigative Report = Made completely for the purpose of informing the audience.
Docudrama = Mid point. Somewhat informative and somewhat entertaining, usually leaning more on entertaimment.
Documentary = Made completely for entertainment.
>>
>>63444586

I didn't say I liked it.

Op said "Name your favorite movie" so I picked the only thing I have seen that remotely qualifies. I was bamboozled because someone told me it had subtitles so I might like it.

shows:

the walking dead

series:
fargo

telévision:

hannibal
>>

>Op said "Name your favorite movie"
I never said that
>>
>>63444632

Because the world is a sad broken place and entertainment is just a mask to hide the pain. Only plebs can't handle reality and need the mask.

Stop tricking plebs. They'll never learn if we don't explain it to them, and they'll just keep shitting up the board with pure-memeposting.

Mimes aren't the same thing as movies/films/cinématographes/etc.

They're more akin to theatre/musical theatre/pieces de theatre/theatre d'été/etc.

Film vs Movie vs Cinema is real, but kino, fllick, etc were added by tasteless drones that were made insecure by this whole thing.

“A movie is made for an audience and a film is made for both the audience and the filmmakers. I think that The Game is a movie and I think Fight Club‘s a film. I think that Fight Club is more than the sum of its parts, whereas Panic Room is the sum of its parts. I didn’t look at Panic Room and think: Wow, this is gonna set the world on fire. These are footnote movies, guilty pleasure movies. Thrillers. Woman-trapped-in-a-house movies. They’re not particularly important.” - David Fincher

"My film is not a movie. My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam. It's what it was really like. It was crazy. We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane." — Francis Ford Coppola

>By contrast, in the US "movie" is the predominant form. Although the words "film" and "movie" are sometimes used interchangeably, "film" is more often used when considering artistic, theoretical, or technical aspects, as studies in a university class and "movies" more often refers to entertainment or commercial aspects, as where to go for fun on a date. For example, a book titled "How to Read a Film" would be about the aesthetics or theory of film, while "Lets Go to the Movies" would be about the history of entertaining movies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMsp05iSk7s [Open]

movies are about economics.
cinema is about esthetics.
film is about politics.
-"How To Read A Film" by James Monaco

Also the separation is recognized in these texts
Bresson's Notes on the Cinematographer
Tarkovsky's Sculpting in Time
Delleuze's Cinema I&II

There's nothing inherently wrong with flicks or movies, just as there is nothing inherently wrong with $1 burgers and chocolate.
They're just not very nutritious or healthy.

>>63445063
>It's just a meme.

>Made to appeal

It's as simple as that

If it's doing both at the same time it's a filmie
