In europe they get film funding. Also they become professors at art and film school.

They mostly have other jobs and have their films funded by museums and film institutions.

They don't really. They may be given money to pay the bills in producing their next film, but it's certainly not a career like other filmmaking is.
Peter Greenaway, though he eventually moved away from avant garde, started out as a Gov. film editor and found much of his inspiration through the mundanity of editing TV documentaries and the like.
