He's full of himself a lot, not a hack but certainly overrated. Les Amours Imaginaires was pretty good.

Something about his movies that is a little annoying to me is the actors. The Quebec acting scene tends to be very theatrical and that doesn't fit well with existentialist themes in my experience. It reminds at every corner that the interactions are fictional and inhibits my enjoyment

You're assuming Dolan even tries bringing anything that complex in his works. His films are always stylized melodrama, though Tom at the Farm tried to break this pattern.
