I've heard they also cast Wyman Manderly. The only issue (not that it's an issue for D&D) is that there is absolutely no groundwork laid down. Nothing is ever said about Robb legitimizing Jon before dying. The Jeyne Poole wedding is the basis for most of the theory and that went a completely different path. So he's much closer to the actual events and there's no need for a fetch quest.
The GNC could also be among the reasons for Stannis' early death in the show. While he made questionable decisions in the show he was not a villain and not an enemy of the North/Starks.
