>>
>>63387948
I definitely agree with the grey humanoids/apes ones, I also noticed that as the most generic "monster" ever. Like a placeholder when they can't think of anything.

There's a lot of tentacle monsters, but those at least have a bit of variety, compared to the other ones.
>>
>>63387948

Just tripfag already you fucking spergson of a chidkiller.
>>
His high pitched voice is so stereo typically jewish Im surprised he doesnt wear those curls and a star of david necklace
>>
>>
Half the things under "tentacle monster" don't even have tentacles.

For instance Pacific Rim. They were specifically designed to NOT have tentacles.
>>
>>63387948
I think the tentacle monster category should have had a slightly different name (even "Tentacle\Monster") but Landis' point still stands. Monster design has gotten really boring lately.
>>
So his murderer daddy is paying for him to be a "pop culture critic" now that the movie thing flopped?
>>
I like how on RLM he put up this giant defense about how he was saying Hollywood wasn't unoriginal, he was just complaining about lack of original IPs. Then he posts this shit, it's not even good. There's a shit ton of varied monster designs in his 3 minute clip.

What a douchy guy.
>>
It's a little silly to include Gort and The Destroyer from Thor, but that's still an overwhelming amount of evidence.

I always though the arena monsters from Attack of the Clones looked pretty memorable, actually. At least the tiger with a bunch of eyes.
>>
>>63388432
But Max Landis says it's a tentacle monster, just watch the video anon and agree with him.
>>
>>63388432
The Godzilla monsters weren't tentacle monsters either. But anything to fill an autistic movie theory I guess
>>
>>63387948
Can't say I agree with much of this. The humanoid thing yeah okay I guess.
But some monsters on the list don't make sense. The Kraken for instance is based on the old sea legends, which refer to a big octopus like monster, hence the name and looks.
>>

b-b-but it doesn't have tentacles...it fits more into the grey humanoid category

>>
>>63387948
A lot of this has to do rendering limitations. People figured out how to render realistic metal first. Lifelike human skin is extremely hard to render perfectly because of the warmth/color tones and the way it reflects light. Thats why there are so many dark grey/cold looking skin tones. People also figured out how to render "wet" surfaces easy, which is why there are so many scenes with big cgi monsters in the rain. Im pretty sure the Godzilla movie guys said that, word for word, in an interview somewhere.

Making everything grey and lifeless is an easy way to contrast the main characters. Every good robot in transformers is shiny and bright and colorful. By contrast, every bad guy is dark and desaturated and dull. Most movies do stuff like that, especially with robots and aliens, to show how inhuman the bad guys are. Tentacles are an easy way to show how wild and crazy something is. I think its nitpicking to say the monsters are unoriginal when its really the cheap symbolism and messages that are unoriginal. Tons of those monsters looked completely unique.

The guy cherrypicked pretty hard with some movies that had a variety of monsters too.

>>
>>63390919
Yeah, but they're green when they're not blending in.
>>
>>63390590
Forgot to mention one more thing about the skin rendering. Its extremely easy to go into the uncanny valley when rendering normal humans. CGI humans almost always make you think "something about this guy isnt right. they look weird and off". Naturally adding in "weird and off" things, like unnatural skin colors and odd facial features, plays off the uncanny valley in a good way. Instead of thinking creatures look like theyre fake CGI imitations, you get tricked into thinking they are creepily close to looking like humans. The uncanny valley is used to the movies advantage instead of being a flaw.

One thing where I thought the Uncanny Valley was actually beautifully used was in Tron Legacy. You'd expect a digital clone of Jeff Bridges to look...well, digital, so him looking human and at the same time inhuman was perfect. Also cemented CLU as someone who shouldn't be trusted.

Also, and this is probably an unpopular opinion, but the uncanny valley in Adventures Of Tintin gave it a perfect "realistic cartoon" feel.

a lot of those monsters were designed well before 2000s and weren't redesigned particularly differently, like complaining the Kraken has tentacles is fucking ridiculous.

or that Indie 4 has grey aliens when grey aliens are a staple of 1950s sci-fi which the movie, although poorly, was purposefully trying to invoke.

also Ultron's been a grey robot since 1968

that's because they're all based on reptilian designs, most monsters in general are based on animals and Pacific Rim was specifically paying homage to kaiju movies - which were predominantly monsterized animals.

it's not a trend of the 2000s that monsters are based on animals, it's been like that forever.
>>
>>63392490
isn't that just because most orifices generally resemble one another
and flowers are just plant orifices
so really human mouths just resemble pink flowers and Pacific Rim Monster mouths resemble blue ones?

that's a bad point
>>
>>63387948
Very stupid video. The way he classifies things is incredibly vague and could basically hold tons of creatures in it from before the 2000s, adding to that half of the monsters he has examples of don't fit the categories anyway.

Lots of those monster designs are also pretty good, so I don't get the complaining. Or is he complaining? Is he just pointing out something he notices? It's just a dumb video.

I don't even know if Del Torro's movies count. with a few exceptions they all share many similar design themes but they're all being designed by pretty much the same guy. Which might be a good question for OP's video is how many creature designers worked on all these projects and if there is any overlap.

Yeah there's more than a lot of underwhelming and samey creature design in popular movies. Forms get repeated and reused either because of reliance on software like MASSIVE (used for rendering large groups like in I Robot) or just cost saving in general. Del Toro talks about in designing a creature well you want to give it a dynamic silhouette, focusing on a certain aspect in scene x and then a different quality in the reveal of scene y or some such.

The problem is that studios these days mostly just use art school illustrators who are doing "just a job". They create tons of designs and then collaborate via committee and slowly combine elements to create something "original".

Few visionary artists and monster makers exist anymore. If they do, the studios certainly don't care. Just use a bunch of 20 somethings to make a generic beastie.

The point of a monster is to be scary and there's only so many features humans find frightening. Surprised he didn't mention size, voice pitch, eye shape, or sex since those things also factor in, though I guess are held constant regardless of film decade.

Also, notice how literally all robot monsters nowadays make the "BRRRRN" dubstep foghorn sound because if they made "beep boop" sounds they wouldn't be scary. I'd love it if someone edited a bunch of movies and made the robots have realistic sounds.

I think he explains himself really badly when it comes to tentacle monsters, which badly undermines his point because people just think that anything is a tentacle monster according to him. Two other points, putting all of the grey humanoids together, apelike bruisers together, etc in the video would have made the similarities more obvious, and a lot of clips don't really give a good look at the monster, so instead using still images, maybe concept art, and identifying and drawing lines to the relevant characteristics would have made his point better. Also I think that providing examples of monsters that do not fit these three categories would have been good. I think that he's largely right, but it's very difficult to understand, especially for a casual viewer.

Honestly, if Max Landis went into film criticism I would respect him. He would be one of the extreme FEW who actually made a movie, like Roger Ebert did. If he can make more money doing Youtube videos then God bless him I think.

Also do another movie fights you hipster twat.
