It had some big problems, it definitely did not evoke the spirit of the original movie like they claimed but I get the impression most of the people who disliked it didn't like Godzilla to begin with

I watched it in theatre and thought it was mediocre. Then I watched it again in home and liked it way more. Especially all those nods to the 50s nuclear sci fi movies. It even uses the atom bomb stock footage.
I liked it a lot, but I've seen every Godzilla film. It feels like a reasonable homage to the old Toho films.

I disliked it because I went to see a movie called godzilla about godzilla and it only had like 2 minutes of godzilla in it. They killed off the only interesting character 20 minutes in and it became a generic "hurr gotta save the bland ass family from the disaster" movie.

A human focused Godzilla movie with minimal Godzilla screentime could have worked if the human characters weren't so generic and uninteresting. The kick ass military man guy was just so boring that you were desperate for Godzilla to show up just for something to enjoy.
This movie is a shame because it has some very good sequences like the monster fighting and the Skydivers. I could never sit through it again though.

also kickass was boring. he wasn't terrible but neither was he fun or charismatic, he was just there being family guy in military.

I think some other Godzilla movies have had awful human casts you're stuck with, Ghidorah the Three Headed monster for example, most unlikable bunch of cunts in probably the entire franchise you're stuck with for the whole movie as they blunder around that retarded espionage subplot with the Venusian princess.

So basically take him out of the movie? for me, they could have easily kept him alive and have him and Serizawa comparing notes and running the numbers on how to track the MUTOs, worse yet they completely trashed the setup they had in the beginning, Cranston's wife dies staying behind to save other people and then you'd have to conflict of quickass wanting to go disarm the nuke and Cranston can't bear to lose another family member but he sees that he's just like his mom and begrudgingly lets him.
blah blah quickass destroys the brood, is saved by Godzilla, cue tearful reunion of father and son, they're frayed relationship now repaired.
But nah, we only paid Cranston for half hour, you die nao
It was annoying how central they made Cranston to all of the marketing when he was barely in the movie. They obviously wanted to cash in on his Breaking Bad trendiness. The man is a walking reddit meme but I'd have much rather watched him lead the movie than Kick Ass.

Looking Back on it, Godzilla 2014 is basically a 70's Godzilla film. Godzilla is never explicitly stated to be good or evil but fights the bad monster despite causing destruction himself. Hell he is even seen as a hero each time.
