Ask a former Blockbuster manager anything.

Go ahead.

Some quick things -

All of the scratched games we would get back would go into a pile that, one day, our GM was going to rent one of those machines that cleaned discs. We know he'd never do this he was too cheap, so we would take the games and sell them to the gamespot down the street. Sold 3 or 4 games at a time every month, got enough store credit to buy a ps3 and mgs4.

also used to jerk off in the office while i watched people shop, through that mirror thing that surrounded the store from above.

Would constantly steal money and blame it on new employees not knowing how to count the drawer correctly.

Would close the store early and sit in the office with my fellow employees, eat free candy and popcorn and watch movies on the test tv.

Best job ever, I get sad whenever I think about closing down :(

pic related is the last thing I took, not an exact pic of it but that one. My friend mike destroyed it so I left it over his house.

Why did you have to destroy things like posters and standees?
>>
>>63326547
>>63326509
Aside from stealing money sometimes, yes I was a very good employee and did everything I could to make sure the store stayed open.

again, aside from actually stealing $10 for lunch every now and then.

and it's not like it was my specific store that went out of business, you're acting like me being a good employee would have prevented redbox and netflix from happening, ya know?
>>
>>63326509
Did employees purposely fuck up scanning the drop box returns on time so people would get late fees? Seemed like common practice at mine, to the point where nobody every used the drop box and there was sometimes a line 10 deep of people returning movies.
>>
>>63326583
What do you mean?
We didn't destroy them because the managers told us to ever, we would fuck up a hannah montana stand up thing sometimes but mostly we kept them in the back with the empty cases.
>>
The only video store in Navarre, Florida was Network Video.
>>
>>63326602
Definitely yes. But it happened so often that me and the other manager would just waive late fees if someone had a believable story.

We also had methods of preventing this like wall check, where we'd have a list of past dues and have to go through the wall checking to see if they were actually late or if someone just didnt scan it in.

short answer: purposefully, rarely. no.

What is the strangest movie rental request you've been asked to find?
What is the strangest one that you actually had for rent?
>>
>>63326618
That's different. I've heard from Blockbusters and FYEs and such that after a certain amount of time, whenever they had to take down a poster, they were told to destroy it. Recently I spoke to one employee of an FYE who said he had to have his manager on the phone listening to him tear up this Stormtrooper poster when they were finished with it. And like I said, I've heard similar things from Blockbusters and other movie stores.

>>
>>63326701
interesting! i wonder why that is.
we were a franchise so maybe we didn't have to because of that.
corporate BBs had all these weird rules, i can imagine that may have been one of them. We mostly kept the shit.
>>
>>63326766
did motherfucker mike work at a blockbuster?!

How did you handle kids people breaking discs in the store and leaving or stealing candy?
>>
>>63326689
cool i bet you had lots of friends growing up
>>
>>63326509
Did anyone ever accidentally turn in their homemade porno instead of the movie?
>>
>>63326855
That didn't happen normally
BUT

the manager who trained me was finishing up his last two weeks there, was telling me how much he couldnt fucking wait to quit, all the bad shit seems to happen to him etc, as if on queue, a little kid comes to the front desk and just PUKES this huge pile of green/brown smelly throwup.
my manager looked like he wanted to kill himself in that moment.

We were in a pretty rural area, but there were crackheads that would come in and try to steal, mostly we'd let them, but sometimes we'd catch them if they were being obvious and "ban" them from the store, only to have them come in the next week.

I used to take the little yellow locks with the magnet strips into urban outfitters and american apparel so the alarm beeper would go off when i was walking in, so after i walked out with a sweatshirt and some pants or whatever without paying, id be like "yeah it must be my phone its like this every time!"

good stuff

>Mom yells at me that we have soda at home.

r u me
>>
>>63326922
no but we had free AOL discs in the store (this was 2009, so its still beyond me why they would have these here) and sometimes people would take a free disc and just return that disc inside the case for some reason? as if we weren't gonna call them, but this wasnt one of those stores where we took credit card info down, just a phone #. so if they give us a wrong #, they got a free movie basically.

wtf was the actual purpose of those one way mirrors supposed to be exactly
>>
>>63326782

for why
>>
>>63327049
good way of us, being all the way in the front of the store, could see what was happening behind all the shelves, see if anyone was stealing along the wall.
also, parts were a one way mirror so we could monitor parts of the store from the office.
Probably a one way mirror because it behooved us to keep uniformity throughout the store. A deterrent to thieves "maybe the this is a one way mirror, maybe this one is" etc
>>
>>63324837
you know movie stores aren't completely dead. a lot of smaller towns still have them where people aren't all caught on to netflix. there was a media store which sold/rented CDs, DVDs and even VHS tapes down the street from where I lived as a teenager. my friend and I would walk down every week and rent DVDs, I remember watching fight club with him for the first time. there's something about the immediacy of streaming movies that isn't as magical, the feeling of gambling on a bad movie, renting it just because it has a cool cover is gone. and the feeling when you rent a random movie and its amazing, netflix can't compare

Nah, we go to the local video store where it's cheaper so you get more for your buck, so we can rent more than one thing.
