I think it's a case of him having acquired it by using the laughing-space as a breather initially. That's why it's an inward-breath laugh. Does wonders if you're getting breathless from doing long monologue-jokes.

Not fake per se. He doesn't actively try to make a weird laugh anymore, but it's not a natural laugh he's had since he was a kid. It's like when you've lived in a place for so long that you start talking with the same accent as the people you interact with all the time. That's not faking an accent, it's acquiring one.
