the show is fantastic in terms of a period piece, showing ny at the turn of the century, mass immigration, electrification, surgery becoming mainstream. The racial stuff can be interesting as well, but the heavy load of it detracts from the more interesting subject matter. Still a very entertaining show though.

I can only tell you my opinion, but I've been watching movies and television my whole life and love everything from the shoddiest shlock to the highest art. I think television is in the worst state it's been since the "golden age" started and there isn't a show that's anywhere close to the level of quality found in The Knick that's airing currently. I'm not expecting everyone around here to love the show, but dismissing it outright is akin to blasphemy if you claim to enjoy complex television. And the level of discourse on this board is such that I'd rather not see it brought up here at all than people responding with Meh, comparing it to Supergirl, and reducing it ad infinitum as if they are all valid criticisms.
