What was the point of this scene? Was it to illustrate how superficial the 80's business world was?

I feel like there was a point but I missed it.

Aside from driving home how superficial and interchangeable the character are, it also hints at Luis' crush on Bateman and sets up Bateman's jealousy over Paul Allen as well as Paul being totally oblivious of Bateman.

It's true
>>

Only after many years' distance did Brett Easton Ellis admit that he was just feeling pretty fucking shitty when he wrote American Psycho--it was, in essence, a long violent escapist fantasy used by a young man to avoid his own issues.

What was the point of any of that book (or movie, in this case)? No one fucking knows. No one's been able to make sense of it, the author himself flip flops on what it is and isn't, and all that can be said for sure is that it's fun, it's cynical, and it allows for multiple interpretations. The book did as well.

Why did he hang out with Tom Cruise in an elevator? Why did Bono pronounce himself the devil? Why did he allow rats to crawl up women's vaginas?

Nobody ever knows, anon. That's what makes Psycho so good--the shit's impenetrable.

You dolt. It's a very specific narrative with a very specific point of view on the life style of the developing yuppie wall street class.

It may have helped with his issues that he mentioned in several discussions - but the book and especially the movie - has a very specific point.

That "no one knows" state is fucking moronic.

Bret's words on it:

"I was writing about a society in which the surface became the only thing. Everything was surface -- food, clothes -- that is what defined people. So I wrote a book that is all surface action: no narrative, no characters to latch onto, flat, endlessly repetitive. I used comedy to get at the absolute banality of the violence of a perverse decade. Look, it's a very annoying book. But that is how as a writer I took in those years."

>is it though

How did you miss the fucking point? He narrates the exposition. Initially Bateman is proud of his business card, until he realizes that the bone coloring and silian rail lettering are utterly inferior to the card's of his coworkers. Van Patten's eggshell with romalian type make Bateman's card look like a business card template from Staples. Even with slight redemption after Bryce's raised pale nimbus lettering on white, he still has doubts. That's why he asks to see Paul Allen's card. He knows he is inferior to Paul Allen, in every way, but he still needs to see the card. And it crushes him. The subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. It even had a fucking watermark.

Bateman is a kek. Every other character realizes this, but for some reason he's still in denial. The whole movie is his journey coming to terms with this fact.

It was pure comedy
any other theme's were just secondary
>>
>>63233905

>It's a very specific narrative with a very specific point of view

>Brett's word on it

>No narrative

Nah. You're reading too much into it. Ellis concocted a nice explanation for the novel after the fact. He was bitter, he hated the people around him, Psycho was born purely out of that vitriol and the themes were secondary.

This is like saying DFW's writing style was devised to compliment the themes of Infinite Jest, or McCarthy's to The Road, when both were results--or at least benefited--from inherent traits already present in the writers.

American Psycho is pure escapist fantasy. It also happens to be a work of genius, but a fluke one--everything else Ellis ever wrote sucks shit.

I lost my shit reading the book. I eventually retaliated in skim reading because I couldn't take Bateman going over exactly everything every character was wearing whenever they were mentioned. Seriously, I want someone to edit the book without all that shit, it would literally be 20 pages shorter. I get it, that's the point. Bateman is crazy and it's a good representation of the materialistic world we live in. It was funny at first, but that shit was just not fun to read.
However, the train of thought Bateman had of continually counting homeless people was A+.

It wasn't in the book. I never liked this scene because it felt so forced... like the director or the writer was mocking or trying to imitate the style of the book somehow. It feels out of place.

The book wouldn't be as fun without the clothes. It's not an entertaining 3rd person story, it's a trip into the mind of a total loon. If it didn't have the weird thought mannerisms it wouldn't be special.
