In the DC area here we had an Opie and Anthony type duo, "Don and Mike". Don retired and Mike tried to go it alone. Don was basically Anthony, and Mike was Opie. Opie/Mike are the straight man. All the personality and humor comes from the Anthony/Don personalities. When Don left, show was just dead air, got cancelled almost immediately. Opie is basically just a tortilla.

Its like how Stanhope did the "sea world/closing bit", and Bill then did a similar bit about a closer involving helicopters. It wasn't stealing and Bills take was really funny but also seemed less original like he had heard Stanhope and built on the concept to deliver another take. When he moved to LA (for the second time) and started his podcast it was a new format at the time, so he built on what he new about that format and did a solo take. They live and work in the same fucking city, in the same business, and have the same friends (for now); they're going to have to deal with each other in some form, no matter how much they like or dislike one another. yeah, the thing with Anthony's show is that .. it lacks Opie's frat boy cruelty and assholishness.
Sure, they're obnoxious qualities. But that element is what made the show hysterical. Opie is a genuine asshole in a lot of ways and wasn't afraid to let it show. In a lot of ways that helped, even made, the show. That's perhaps his biggest contribution and what you realize is missing when you watch the pretty bland TACS (love Ant but the show is bland)

Yeah Patrice and Louis and Bill Burr were all over O&A in the early 2000s before they were big names.
If anything, O&A listeners should get some respect for being ahead of the curve. Theres 10s if not 100s of millions of viewers on their old shows and countless posts lamenting the fact that they didn't know about it sooner.
I began listening when they transitioned to XM cause it had this cool underground vibe of these whacked out racist assholes being given a playground on a new satellite network where they could do whatever they wanted. I listened for a few years from around 2002 on, it was some of the best comedy. It was as informative as The Daily Show but orders of magnitude more funny. It was more subversive than Howard stern, how they fucked with their own guests, and with XM they had access to big names and would just treat them like shit to their faces.
I'm glad I listened and don't regret it as wasted time at all. THis new stuff is sad, but it's nice they are still trying to go in some capacity and I respect Op on some marginal level for what he's done
