The criminals didn't punish him though, they tried to but the cops came before they could. Also the film ins't ambiguous over how it feels about the criminals trying to punish him.

Does a child rapist and murderer needs to be punished ? Well... I'm pretty confident we can say yes. That's just not the point the movie is trying to make.
