I remember following this movie religiously with it's ARG campaign. I love how everyone thought that Lion bit was a reference to the movie being Voltron

You're too young then. People heard

I thought people were trolling when they kept saying that. But it turns out, many people genuinely thought that is what was said.

I think it was just in the teaser trailer or something like that. Possibly one of the ARG videos. Dude was in a car who said it. I think it was either muffled sounding or he mouthed it. Can't recall, it's been years.

Yeah, the movie itself was shit, but after that asinine viral marketing campaign, all I cared about was the monster. I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be this retarded orca whale thing.

The whale thing wouldn't have the same impact as stickbug. The stickbug was quick and got around buildings super fast, the whale looks slow and cumbersome and would have just knocked everything over all the time.
>>
>>63220032
Realistically, giant bug should collapse on the floor when reaching the surface.

If its used to extreme high pressures of the deep sea to live, it probably relies on that pressure to stand and move. The thin air would make it unable to move.

Modern western creature design is such shit. I'm terrified JJ and crew will bring the Cloverfield / Super 8 / Star Trek monster shit to Star Wars. If Snokes or whatever looks like pic related I'll drop so hard.
>>
>>63220032
>looks slow and cumbersome and would have just knocked everything over

Yeah it's almost like it's a giant monster.

I like the insect monster design, but the whale crab thing looks more like it really came from the ocean. And it doesn't look like a MUTO, Super 8, etc. It's more distinctive looking.
>>
>>63219430
You never get a good look at it. Even this shot is taken a second before they do some snap zooms and the copter swerves.

Getting a look at it though, it does look very creepy.
>>
>>63220124
>I don't understand satire: the reply
>>
>>63220168
Cloverfield DID come before the MUTOs and Super 8 though, so technically they were ripping Cloverfield off.

I like the whale look too, by the way, I like it a lot. But to get what JJ was going for in directing, to not have the monster show up until the end of the movie, it needed to be quick and agile (at least for monsters), not big and cumbersome.
>>
>>63220218
>I don't know what satire is: the post
>>
>>63219955
>Cloverfield, Super 8

These two were by the same designer and also the same film director.

They actually look quite different from each other when you look at their models, but you barely see either them long enough to form a cohesive image. You just see the stick legs, the black eyes, the same shit.

With Godzilla they went with an intentionally muted and boring design with the MUTOs, because the movie had to be about Godzilla coming about and kicking their asses, and didn't have time to introduce any existing kaiju respectfully. In the commentary they even mention the MUTOs originally had a drastically different design, but they specifically wanted them to look like "modern movie monsters" so they could have Godzilla come and kick their asses, as the true king of the monsters.

But would he walk the dinosaur?
>>
>>63220233
>technically they were ripping Cloverfield off.

The Super 8 monster and the MUTOs were designed by the same guy. They sought out the guy intentionally for the MUTOs because they wanted a classic monster like Godzilla to kill off essentially the "current" movie monsters like Cloverfield shit, since they wouldn't have time to introduce a second kaiju in the first movie.

>>
I was hyped as fuck for Cloverfield based on that teaser. Like with It Follows, my best expectations weren't met, but Cloverfield was mostly alright. The "zz zz zz" monsters in the tunnel were alright, some of the crazier moments were good, but there's was a lot of retardation piled onto the plot.
>>
>>63220233
Yeah, but slow and cumbersome isn't really a bad thing. It's a giant monster, that's the point. It's supposed to be knocking everything over and destroying everything. It's not supposed to be dashing all over the place dodging gunfire and shit.

If it was a Mothra-type monster then yeah it shouldn't look like that. But the Cloverfield monster itself wasn't the fastest anyway and the whale thing would have looked better and more unique/memorable.
>>

I was on the "man, I hope it's a Cthulhu movie" side for no real reason. Then all the Lovecraft nerds started yelling about how a Cthulhu movie wouldn't be about the actual dude wrecking shit, it would be more psychological and blah blah blah.
>>
>>63219430
Why does he even need to say "it's alive"? Isn't that sort of for granted? Otherwise the movie would be about a giant dead alien that falls on Earth and now people have to deal with the grief from this giant beast falling on everybody and killing their loved ones inadvertently.

Dubs confirm. End of Watch is amazing, based Gyllenhaal at his best
>>

>>
>>63220702

I think most people, upon seeing huge dust clouds and hearing buildings collapse and shit blow up, would be to assume it was some kind of bomb or something, or a natural disaster.

Seeing a building fall down and a huge fucking monster crawl over it must be kind of a shock. Hence, "it's alive, it's huge."

>Director Matt Reeves likened the monster to a baby elephant who wasn't used to being on its legs yet and therefore would be clumsy and destroying everything
Yeah, I agree it makes no sense that nothing around him is damaged. Just goes to show that a solid creature design can be completely undone by incompetent direction, lack of intelligent plotting and chaotic cinematography.
>>
>>63220702
All the screaming in that first scene where everyone is on the ground watching the monster approach is pretty unnerving.
>be a teenager

I obsessed over the movie for a while after it came out, looking for all those fictional sites and stuff to learn more about what was happening. But in the end it seems they left it hanguing.

Even worse, I was hyped by the "still alive" easter egg in the ending credits, I was hoping there would be another movie or some form of continuation, maybe dealing with the parents of the monsters if it's true that it was a baby... but apparently someone who worked on the movie confirmed that the nukes eventually killed the monster off-screen.
What a let down.

the fucking first trailer didnt show anything but the party then the statue of Liberty's head. In the street, some guy yells "I SAW IT ITS ALIVE ITS HUGE" then they hear a roar. at the end there's no title or anything but the date 1-18-08.
If I remember right, I read updates on a LOST forum. Then there was an ARG about Slusho and something they found on the ocean floor and shit that didnt make it into the movie.

There was a site where they put up fake polaroids of the party and there was one pic where people swore you could see a demon reflected in a girl's hair.

I was only fifteen when it came out and I stayed up night after night working with people I didn't even know on the ARG and looking at all the character myspaces and studying trailers and pictures and shit. And I was completely satisfied with what I got. None of the characters in the movie are related to the ARG aside from the main character getting a job with the company that mutated Clover. They didn't know ANYTHING that we knew going into it. They're not stupid, they just didn't know shit.

So people acting like the movie sucked because they didn't get some big whole spoon fed explanation of the shit they already knew from playing the ARG are just being fucking HUGE cunts.

This movie is great. If you got sick because of how it was filmed, that also doesn't make it a shitty movie. It makes you a shitty human. You're sitting still and looking at a screen. If you puke from that you are one of the weak ones and I don't care about your opinion anyways.

The monster must have a very good aiming to bite a tiny human in half like that without crashing its head in the ground.

The time the trailer hit and the whole ARC started was one of the best of my life.
The nostalgia just thinking about it, physically hurts me.

Never said PR is good.

Cloverfield isn't good either, backstory on what? The monster's backstory is cookie-cutter shit, the humans are unrelatable and annoying, not sure why you would be interested in their backstory.

I actually like the premise of Cloverfield but the execution was off.

I want to see a superhero film shot like this, like Lois Lane filming Superman fighting Doomsday when the world doesn't know who either of them are.

Why would they say it's alive? Nobody should say that unless they're talking about something you wouldn't expect to be alive. It's not something someone would say about a giant monster. Is this shit writing, shit ad lib or an attempted ruse?
>>
>>63221252
Wouldn't it make more sense to assume the monster rode in on an asteroid or something?

You really weren't around. The first trailer when people were calling it by its release date. On the roof when the explosion went off. Somebody said its alive and even I thought it was a lion. Eventually wished it was Cthulhu. Underwhelming but still think the movie is underrated. Best big monster movie in decades at the time.
>>
Massive disappointment

I was kind of hoping you didn't see the monster at all. I thought nuking NYC was dumb too.
