It's not that I dislike non-linear or non-traditional storytelling or anything like that, but this was just trash. The whole 12 years thing felt like nothing more than a shallow gimmick. And I don't think people should have to lower their expectations just because of how much of a gamble it was to make. I think it is honestly Linklater's worst and deserving of virtually no praise whatsoever.

whayt does this have to do with baneposting
>>
OP I don't think you quite appreciale how long this took to make

Yeah it was pretty damn insufferable, I had to start getting really drunk halfway thru just so I could finish watching it.

Didn't even make me feel nostalgic for my own childhood and I'm a 20 year-old white male from a suburban neighborhood. So yeah, I'd say it missed the mark by a long shot.

I'm 2 years older than the kid in the movie, was super into dbz growing up, had an older sister who was basically the same as the one in the movie, had parents who split up, very similar dad, worse mom, was super into photography and was almost as edgy as him in high school, and yet I felt like I couldn't relate to him at all

I thought it was fantastic. TBF i was familiar with Linklaters entire work before this one so i kinda knew what i was expecing.

It's the only movie I've ever seen that got worse as it went. The first scene was the best of the movie. And the last was probably the worst I've ever seen in film history. Fucking awful

I think the biggest problem is that the kid is a complete cipher. There's absolutely nothing to him. He's dull as all hell despite the fact that you spend more than two hours completely focused on him. You could say that's the point as all teenagers are boring, but it's more likely Linklater made him a blank slate so people could easily apply themselves to him.

Also, the sister and Arquette were both dreadful. I cannot for the life of me understand how she even got nominated for an Oscar.

Very accurate description. Sitting through the whole damn thing just to see the kid end up a whiny deadbeat eating a pot brownie in the desert with some other turds made me feel as if Linklater himself ran in the room and personally kicked me in the dick
>>
Linklater understands exactly what it's like to be in that awkward stage where you're growing up; that to be a kid is to have things be completely out of your control and be a passenger to your own life; to be a teenager is more than just angst and rebellion, it's trying to make the most of your youth when you don't know how to do it.

Because Linklater understands how the more you grow up, the more adult conversations start to make a scary amount of sense, and the more you start to have them yourself; it's a pretty heartbreaking thing to continue to grow up and see just how flawed your parents are.

Because Linklater understands that the little moments count more than anything else. Camping with dad. Small conversations you have with family and friends. That ride home you get after a good long night with friends. Lying in the grass and staring to the skies - the future is a scary prospect but that's okay.

Because Ellar Coltrane starts off as a pretty good child actor and only manages to get better as Mason gets older and emotions get more complex. Everyone in this film gives a stellar performance, especially Patricia Arquette as a mother trying to hold it all together.

Everyone who sees this film will say they saw part of themselves in the film, and also hopefully get the point because all this rambling with all these "becauses" still hasn't done anything to really get at the heart of the film and they never will.

total garbage. if everyone was going to spend that much time and effort they could have come up with something resembling a story.
>>

So basically you're giving credit to Linklater for having a childhood?
>>
>>63107924
I don't think you're really on the money since millennials have a pretty elongated adolescence. Maybe other generations can more relate to what you're saying. Actually yeah, that's probably why most critics loved it and why /tv/ hated it
>>
>>63107058
I live in the same area where it was shot (San marcos/kyle) and it was shite m8
>>

You know that when you say millennials, you're talking kids right?
When have older people ever listened to kids and not immediately shat on their opinions?
As a movie you have to like the idea of it to get into it, and the genre is coming of age. We've seen films like the hunger games doing coming of age with archery and death sports, why is an actual coming of age film so different?
You could say, well its not a story and I didn't like it, and thats perfectly fine because thats pretty accurate in the first place.
The only difference is the feelings it generated in you, as always, and us oldfags know that.
If you don't give a shit about 'muh childhood' then this was never your cup of tea, just like people don't like scifi/fantasy because its too unrealistic or sports because they don't understand why people are so into the teams and game.

This movie is comfy until he turns 16 and becomes a literal redditor
