I care about Rebels VS Empire. I don't give a fuck about the Republic or Cis. We barely know about them. There's a clear goal here: blow up the new deathstar.
I can barely tell what the fuck is happening in the RotS battle. They're supposedly trying to rescure Palpy, but they're constantly shelling the ship he's on. There's no sembalance of strategy or sequential logic to it, and a total lack of setup.
In RotJs battle we have a much clearer sequence of events.

It even goes beyond that, from the framing to the sound design to the texture of the models it just "feels" better. There is some god awful compositing in RotJ and if you watch closely you'll notice that a lot of ships change size and there is a lot of mirroring going on to expand the number of ships but overall it just holds up better.
The whole scene falls apart as soon as the fucking missiles are fired at the two Interceptors.

But that's wrong. The reason this scene sucks is because there's no cool space action shit. It goes from that badass opening piece with the capital ships and the fighters and then the rest is Obi-Wan and Anakin talking and flying in a straight line. No cool dogfights like in the Battle of Endor, no tension like A New Hope.
If it was a CGI-fest balls to the wall space battle scene it would be top 5. But it wasn't that so it isn't.

I'll tell you, my honorable OP, why this battle utterly sucks. It's not the effects or visuals.
It's because...WHO CARES. Seriously, who the FUCK CARES.
You know what makes a battle engrossing? When characters you care about are fighting a motherfucker so vile that you can't imagine, in that moment, anything so satisfying as seeing the fucker get their comeuppance in the most brutal manner conceivable.
So here's where we run into a problem:
A) We don't care much for Anakin because he's a whiny cipher with cringeworthy lines. We kinda care about Obi-Wan, I guess, but only in a "he's not as boring as everyone else" kinda way.
B) We don't hate the enemy. Who IS the enemy? Just some faceless "Separatists" whose motivations were never fully explained or fleshed-out (were they willing pawns in Palpatine's game? Or were they actually fighting for some ideal that Lucas never bothered to let us in on? Either way, it adds up to WHO FUCKING CARES).
C) Even ignoring A and B, we're never invested in the outcome of the battle because BOTH SIDES ARE CONTROLLED BY THE SAME FUCKING GUY. No matter who wins or loses, Sheev wins. The audience loses, because we couldn't care less what the outcome is.
D) Even if by some remote chance we DO like Anakin or Obi-Wan, we already know they're gonna live.
E) We don't know who's who, ship-wise. Gone are the days when X-Wing = good, Tie Fighter = bad. All I see are ships.
In conclusion...why are we even TALKING about the prequels? Let's just all agree that they were an alternate reality/fanfic/whatever and pretend they never happened.

Phantom Menace cgi looked pretty amazing when it first came out. But I remember thinking that the clones battle stuff at the end of Episode 2 looked like a video game cutscene even when it was just released.
Episode 3 had some decent work but it's fucked up by the fact that so many things - entire rooms the characters are in - are cgi, which makes it painfully obvious that it's all false.
