Here's a hint: anything historical gets a head start from critics. Remember Elizabeth and the King's Speech? absolutely bland movies, but leniency for historical flicks is the norm.

Personally, I don't really give a fuck about historians. If they want history, they can watch a doco or read a book. I don't care how much twisting of history is involved if the film is good.
That being said, Selma is an alright film. Not amazing, but I didn't hate it.
