What jokes didn;t you get on the Simpsons?

On that episode where Homer replaces the Capitol City Goofball, Marge expresses enthusiasm for '4th Street and D' and then Tony Bennett sings it in associate enthusiasm.

Why is 4th street and D funny?

Now, the joke there is that while it's R rated - it's a shit 'naughty' movie for 10 year olds to sneak into, right?
>>
>>63088063
It's just a completely generic, unglamorous-sounding name and it's funny to hear it being crooned in this song about how romantic and exciting Capitol City is supposed to be.

I don't get it.

tony bennett made lots of music for broadway productions, and broadway is on 4th street.
>>
>>63088080
It's funny because the kids assume they're going to get to see something sexy and/ or violent, but we the audience know that they're actually going to be bored and confused by an arty, alienating character drama.

Black or Blue haired kid'sDad were dropping them off somewhere (either the cinema complex direct or their intended sleepover home) and they were going to sneak in. Dad (no woman drove a puickup in the 90's) was in the cab and thus couldn't hear their their conspiracy from the pickup tray. Duh.

I have a feeling the writer's designed it to be a cheeky in-joke without knowing that autists/memers/buzzfeeders would expand it in 2014/2015.

I've always hated the joke and the explanation given here. I like to think it used to be called Chuck's Feed & Seed and as a strange coincidence a person named Sneed happened to buy it.

>>
>>63088438
I'm pretty sure it was, and may still be. But since obviously both of us don't and can't be worried to look up 90's US state traffic laws state-by-state, we'll call a truce (even though i predict I'm right; and even though the Simpsons was deliberately not assigned to a particular US state....which may prove my point).

Baseball requires equipment, an enormous field, plates, bats, helmets, fencing...it's more for privileged, moneyed people. Am. Football is the same way and why neither caught on in other countries. They're literally too poor for it.

the third one is about the energy density of the universe at t_0 (right now)

firstly, note that the curvature of the universe is either
1)zero -> flat
2)positive -> elliptical
3)negative -> hyperbolic

now, the symbol that homer writes, omega, is the (energy density of the universe) / (energy of the universe for flat space)

so if omega >1 we are dealing with elliptical geomtry which means the universe will eventually be crushed under it's own weight

if omega <1 we have hyperbolic geometry and the universe will expand infinitely

if omega =1 then the universe is flat, which is most likely what the univers truely is, or very close to flat at least

In the scene, homer writes greater than, walks to basement, a large explision is heard, he walks upstairs, cahnges to less than, walks downstairs, another large explison is heard, and he walks upstairs and changes it to an equlaity .So the "joke" is that homer has destroyed the universe twice, and somehow brought it back to its previous state.

i was thinking about it. have you read it? and is it good?

reason i haven't already is that i feel like it is going to be a 150 page book about 5-6 instances that the simpsons referenced fairly entry-level math. Except the higgs of course, but even that was a quite widely accepted prediction for the mass.

off the top of my head, times that math was referenced:
r dr r from the first episode
this chalkboard
another near-miss fermat from a tree-house of horrors

So basically i'm worried it'll be nothing more than "(math equation) is historically important because _____. the joke was written by ____. its funny because _____."

I found it to be pretty entertaining and I know dick about maths theory so it was fun to get some insight into the actual maths and the history/significance of it.
The chapters range from Pi to Homer's chalkboard, Homer3, another slice of Pi, and even into Futurama.
There's trivia along the way thanks to the author actually speaking to the writers rather than just studying the episodes.
A nice touch are the "exams" throughout the book to test your maths based humour too.
I got it for a fiver on Amazon so I'd say it was worth it for sure.

Actually it's more scummy to work on contingency. Lawyers working on contingency dupe suckers into hiring them and then take a huge portion of their settlement (can be as much as 50% + expenses). This is common in personal injury cases.

But of course, Lionel Hutz is whatever kind of scumbag is appropriate. In the episode where Bart eats the jagged metal Krusty-O, Lionel Hutz works on contingency.

>>
>>63103171
Nothing, it's just that people had been trying to prove Fermat's Last Theorem for 350 years.

In the margin of one of his books he wrote that he found a proof but the margin didn't have enough room to write it all out. And none of his other notes contained the proof. This was in the 1600s. It took until 1994 for someone to finally prove it.

So it's kind of a big deal that he basically didn't even think it was worth writing down, but meanwhile nobody else could figure it out for hundreds of years.
