This whole "Lannisters are lions" meme is pretty lame. I mean, are there even lions in Westeros? Were there lions at some point but they died out? This family is so full of itself. The moment when High Sparrow was about to arrest Cersei and she tried to escape thinking "he can't touch me I'm a lion!" was the cringiest of all.

According to TWOIAF, lions are around in the Westerlands. The Hound's and Mountain's grandfather even became a nobleman when he rescued Tywin's father from a lioness.
Honestly, a better motto for the Lannisters would be "Pride Before the Fall". It has dual meanings. The first being you'll face a pride of lions before your downfall since the Lannisters will rally against their opposition. The second meaning, an enemy's hubris will lead to their destruction (i.e. the Reynes and Tarbecks).

That has no real relation to their heraldry. The coast of arms of Norway has been a lion since the 1200s, and there sure as fuck aren't any lions there. Or in England, for that matter. All the Scandinavians plus the Finns use lions.
