They probably didn't take that behind closed doors fight seriously. That or Rocky let Apollo win as a thank you for helping him out. It makes no sense that Rocky who was in top physical and mental condition would lose to Apollo at that point.

I rewatched the first Rocky today and I'd forgotten just how well-written it is. It's full of great dialogue and nice little character moments. It's really funny in a lot of places too. It's very impressive for a debut screenplay and it's a shame that Stallone never wrote anything to match it again, but I'm sure he wouldn't complain about the career he's had.

What have have you seen him in? He got widespread acclaim for Fruitvale Station and I'd say he also gave very solid performances in Friday Night Lights and Chronicle.
Also, he really hasn't had that much studio money spent on him at this point. Fantastic 4 is the only blockbuster movie he's starred in. Creed only has a budget of $35 million so it's not like some major investment.
