Nothing, it's arguably Kevin Smith's best movie. Hard to believe that Dante having to choose between Rosario Dawson who he gets along with and loves him and the soulless fading Stacy was actually a choice though.
I just watched this yesterday and thought it looked particularly nice despite nothing being that remarkable about it. Was it shot on 35mm? It has a raw look to it while also being clean, pretty and professional.

Dante was fucking himself though. I think that Dante and Randall both wanted the same thing out of life but neither of them really knew until the scene in the jail cell. Dante felt like he had to become a normalfaggot sooner or later but Randall rejected this and decided to fuck around until he knew what he wanted. He mightn't have been steering Dante anywhere positive but he kept him from killing his soul for the sake of something he didn't really want. They were both unhappy but Randall holding onto his adolescent faggotry eventually led them to where they really wanted to go.

Kevin Smith's movies all go over-the-top wacky with completely improbable scenarios. Clerks is just about the only one of his movies that doesn't do this (you could make an argument for Chasing Amy); it relies mostly on dialogue for its comedy and does a decent job of making you believe the characters are real people. Clerks 2 does the reverse with stuff like that weird kid side character and his "girlfriend's" pussy troll, inter-species eroticafucko, impromptu musical scenes, etc. etc.
