If you live somewhere very remote they might stop right in front of your house, but normally an entire neighborhood shares a school bus stop.
It's extremely common where I live (washington state), but they don't stop "at" your house unless you live in the middle of nowhere. They tend to drive routes with a few specific pickup and dropoff spots, like a normal bus. You just figure out which one is closest to your house and walk there in the morning.
If you live out in the middle of nowhere, you can usually get one to come pick you up personally. Youth education is considered a basic human right in America and the government takes it very seriously, and they WILL provide transportation to the schools if it is needed.

in high school it was incredibly lame if you took the bus because it was mixed with middle schoolers. i lived in a moderately upper class town, so mostly everyone drove as soon as they were 16. if you wanted to be perceived as even a little bit cool, you could not take the school bus. my parents didn't buy a car for me until i was 18, but by then my sister used it all the fuck damn time so from 16-18 i had to walk to school every fucking morning. it was only like 20 minutes on foot, but still sucked when it snowed. anyways that's my school bus story.
I lived 3 miles away from my elementary school and middle school. I would've had to walk an hour along rural roads with no sidewalks in a town with bobcats, bears, skunks, and raccoons with rabies. That would've taken 2 hours out of my day and in a town with heavy snow in the winter it's just not practical.
