The three stooges is actually exactly Sam Raimi's influence when it comes to comedy.

Even though they can't reference it, Army of Darkness is still canon and very much a part of the Evil Dead DNA. If anything they've toned down the slapstick.

Did you never see Evil Dead 2? Ash has a slapstick fight with his own hand where he break plates on his head. Physical comedy is a hallmark of the Evil Dead series.
