Solid ep. Fun to watch, very intense. However probably my least favourite of this series because while Mark has had breakdowns when he panics in the past, this was a bit too "wacky" for Peep Show. Gerard was the only person on the show to genuinely love Dobby and I'm sad to see they killed him off. They were literally perfect for each other and Mark had to ruin that. I'm torn on this series. I think I'm probably enjoying it more than I was at this stage last time, but it's hard to imagine how the plot could reach a fully satisfying conclusion in only three more episodes. I'll reserve judgement until it's over, but I'm not feeling hugely optimistic right now.
I enjoyed this episode, but I feel like its faults encapsulate the faults of latter seasons generally.
Early Peep Show would have had Mark use foundation to cover his eyelids - foundation that would quite visibly not match his skin tone. April and her husband might have either noticed and been visibly curious or asked, but everything would've been kept much more implicit and restrained.
Earlier seasons might very well have had a setup of this sort - the dinner party with the bickering couple - and in fact, they did, in S1, with their neighbour that Jez wanted to fuck. But that would have been one episode out of a multi-episode arc, whereas I doubt we'll be seeing April and husband again (not that I'll be upset if we do).
Overall, I'm glad they're giving the show an ending as opposed to just stopping, but I feel like the better option still would have been to end the show a couple of seasons ago. It's clear the writers just don't have the same passion and commitment to it that they used to. So many scenes and so much dialogue clearly never got the third or fourth pass that they needed, so many beats of plot and character are manifestly contrived.
I'd like to see the series end with Mark being sectioned like in one of the previous series.
Him going legit insane is the only way I could accept this bastardisation of his character.
I'm still laughing at this show but the jokes really don't feel as clever as they used to.

No, that's just it. It would cover it, but it would be obvious that it was covering something. They wouldn't (ideally, in my mind as I write the Peep Show episode I'd like to see) actually say anything, but they'd clearly be uncomfortable. We'd get dialogue from Mark's POV where they're clearly distracted by the foundation and keep catching themselves glancing at it. Mark would meanwhile be torturing himself over what they must be thinking in their minds.
I mean, there's no way at all that Mark can greet April and husband with his eyes covered in blue eyeshadow and then, at ANY point subsequent to having done that, think that things are going well and that he has a chance with April. Something like the eyeshadow - some manifestation of undeniable fucking-weirdness - is best kept as an episode-ending punchline, rather than a second-act plot point. The second he opens the door and waves them in with eyeshadow on, Mark HAS to know he's destroying any chance he had with April. That sort of self-delusion is firmly in Jez country. And I feel like the reason those choices have been made is because the writers don't care enough about the project to find their way to something more satisfying. I don't blame them, it's been nine seasons over twelve(?) years. But I can't pretend I don't notice it.
