it ensures there's always something that's demanded of the protagonist that they simply can not ignore because "muh family". at the same time you can conjure up the most ridiculous drama scenarios without making an effort. the wife's gonna cheat, the kids are going to break the law and get caught, husband's going to have a harmful hobby (drinking, wifebeating, selling meth)
but all of that shit gets a pass because sometimes you need a lame excuse in order to reach an actually interesting scenario (underachieving middle-aged man cooking meth with a former student). plus sometimes it's relatable because family being a fucking drag also tends to be a pretty common real life occurrence
