What does /tv/ think of Troy?

I personally think it's really under-appreciated, especially the director's cut. The sense of scale is amazing and the CGI is actually quite reserved. The ancient Greek warfare was much more fun to watch than it was in 300, or any other movie since in my opinion.

Also, what a based cast
>>
It's unfaithful to the Iliad af, but I don't really care because it's a movie with epic scale and casting. Eric and Brad do a very good job along with bean, but damn O'Toole and Cox just steal the show

I like it a lot. I remember it getting a lot of shit on /tv/, but I think it's pretty solid. The only thing that really bugged me was that Helen was so unremarkable, but I guess that's just a matter of taste.

I could watch Brian Cox as Agamemnon all day, every day.

We don't get epics like this anymore, actual good ancient myth movies.

>>
It's probably the best sword and sandal movie in recent memory. Not particularly good, but I rather like it for what it is.
>>
Love the battles.
>>
It wasn't a cheesy CGI fest like most sword and sandal movies these days. The acting was good, and the battles were awesome.. It's not technically a great movie but its entertaining, which was its ultimate purpose

Too highbrow? Including the scene of Achilles's introduction with the two women? The movie had pretty bad dialogue and removing religious aspect from the story was a mistake in hindsight.

Pitt plays it well enough, "Is there no one else?" But there aren't enough ironies in the script. It's a pity that it came out when it did, preferring Gladiator-esque battle scenes to Characterisation within monologues.

Compare it with Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressia, which is full of humour and irony. All of the characters have rhyming elements on the opposite side of the conflict as well.

I would love to see George Lucas direct a Greek Epic, with the aid of a Stan Winston style creature shop. Ideally translating something like Aristophanes to the screen.

My reasoning for this is that Lucas is entirely Classical in outlook, preferring strong archetypes to Characterisation, and in In Greek drama, that is actually a strong asset, whereas in Western Drama, it's quite primitive.

A faithful adaptation of the Iliad wouldn't work because the narrative flow is constantly broken by stuff that is superfluous to the story. For example, all the divine interventions aren't necessary at all and the scenes where they occur could just as easily be done without them. All the overwrought speeches and shittalking would have to be truncated so much that most might as well be cut altogether. The final confrontation between Hector and Achilles is pretty lame in the book because Hector pusses out and tries to run away. Etc.

Tbh I really think it's not a good movie. IMO the cast is just terrible, Brad Pitt and Bana where too pretty for Achilles and Héctor. I love Cox, but he looks small and weak for King Agamemnon. Bean it's ok, nothing more, nothing less.
As some anon said, Paris it's extremely beta, mucho more than it should. The only good cast choice was Ajax.
It's just a movie with pretty people, flashy fights and cliches.

Fucking this. I watched the movie years ago and this week I read the Illiad. The entire book I waited for this final duel expecting some unbelievable shit and all I got is Hector running away, circling the Troy four times and then getting killed almost immediately, after first or second Achilles' attack. One thing I always wanted to know, about the legend of Achilles itself, was that if his character was exaggerated. Kind of like how Davy Crockett was in frontier America. There's just so much to Achilles in legend to make him look drawn out. Added to the fact that the Greeks were the winners of that war and wrote the history. Ironically the Romans who hated Achilles' faction didn't right "The true story behind Achilles that much".

Also would you suppose that Philostratus was on to something when he claimed Achilles and Ajax were both giants ranging up to 15 and 30 feet tall?
>>
>>62997935
They were big guys
>>
>>62997962

it had to happen....
>>
>>62997758

He does realize he's going to die. And he stayed out to give the other Trojans cover to retreat inside of the walls.

Also it goes back to what I was wondering here >>62997935, that the whole Hektor running thing was merely a beefed up propaganda writing of the Greek faction of that era.
>>
>>62997935
How is he drawn out compared to any other Greek hero? And Romans hated Achilles only because he killed Trojans (whom they considered to be their ancestors).
Romans hated people like Odysseus, Diomedes etc even more.
As for Philostratus, he's merely repeating a commonly held belief people had in the ancient world, and there is literary evidence within the Iliad to suggest that the heroes were of supereme stature, furthermore, the supposed tombs of the heroes like Ajax were discovered and apparently their bones were rather large.
>>
>>62997758
It entirely makes sense within the thematic content of the Iliad, this is why the film is rather poor in that respect.
>>
>>62998113

>How is he drawn out compared to any other Greek hero?

I wasn't asking if he was more drawn out than other heroes, but I was asking about Achilles himself. Achilles also was the most greatest warrior of that war. Thus he'd naturally receive more prop ups and such.

Yeah the Romans hated the greek faction and claimed lineage from Troy. That much was established and known. My question was why then didn't they make their counter story. Kind of like neo-confederates will claim Lincoln as the badguy as opposed to US history making him one of the greatest presidents of all time.

With Philostratus, his proposition is much more interesting. If his "Giants" claim is true then maybe it would explain and back up the Greek exaggeration of this story. That his victories in combat were in fact real because he was f'n 30 feet tall and like Goliath on the battle field. It would also explain Hektor's reason on running from him.

>>
Really good wouldn't watch the whole movie more than once a decade but watch the swordfights alot as they're some of the best on film.

All stagefighting ofcourse but really worthy of Achilles stuff.
>>
>>62998266
Eh, when it comes down to it is Achilles really more impressive than any of the other Greek heroes? I mean his entire story is a juxtaposition of glory and tragedy, he is only the greatest warrior if the goes down the path of his death. Compare that with figures like Heracles, Odysseus, Theseus, Perseus who all achieved great feats (some greater than Achilles') yet had 1/10th of his suffering.
Virgil did do that with the Aeneid, whereupon they describe the Greeks as bloodthirsty, godless savages that kill suppliants upon the altar of gods and rape women willingly. Jupiter's prophecy that the Romans will rule the world and the Greeks is essentially saying that the Trojans will get their revenge.
Unlike Agamemnon there is no historical Achilles that we know of, so historical philology upon the battle in regards to Achilles the person is somewhat pointless.
>>

It was a pretty good and solid sword and sandal film.
The cast for the Achaean side is fucking awesome: I mean, you can't go wrong with Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Tyler Mane and Brendan Gleeson. Pitt is good, but too "pretty boy" to be fully convincing as Achilles.

As for the Trojans, Bana and O'Toole are the best, too bad we got fucking Bloom for Paris.

I liked that they condensed the story, but some character and situations changes are just plain awful. Turning Paris from a piece of shit cunt with evil intentions to a cowardly piece of shit cunt with good intentions still makes me cringe. But the worse is that they made based Hector kill Menelaus (who were nothing more than a drunkard woman-beater) to protect his sissy brother. For fuck's sake, Hector was a bro that valued honor the most, he would have kicked faggot Paris in the teeth and let him get killed by Menelaus for brininging shame and war to Troy and picking a fight with hele's legitimate husband.

More than ten years ago, I'm still kinda mad.

I guess its fitting that this is being written in the same month as Halloween. The thing is, it is right up there with any of the scenes you would see in a slasher movie. Apparently there are a handful of people who know this story, which is way more than you would expect with something of this significance. It happened about a decade ago on a film set outside the country. It involves a then A+ list mostly movie actor who was married at the time. Back then he was a quiet cheater and kept his indiscretions outside the country which is why he probably shot so many movies outside the US. Later he would change his strategy when it came to cheating and it backfired in a big way. Anyway, our actor was hooking up with a local woman. He was experimenting with drugs which he still does now. Usually he goes for more of the hallucinogenic variety rather than coke. Combined with the steroids and HGh he takes, he can be this rage machine that thinks he is seeing things. Since there were only two people in the room when it happened, no one knows for sure what led to it, but a woman was killed. The same woman he had been hooking up with. She had a broken neck and burns on her body. At the time it happened there was a massive hurricane in the area and no power. Production on the movie had been shut down because of the wind and rain. Our actor was staying in a house he was renting. One of the crew was called to the house by an assistant director and told to bring a tarp and some heavy duty tape. He went over to the house and the assistant director met him at the door holding a lantern. The crew member saw what he thought was a mannequin’s body lying on the floor. He thought it was a mannequin because he didn’t think it was possible for a human to be in that position. Probably why she was dead. He handed over the tarp and tape and then left.

Another crew member said that he was asked the same night if there was some kind of bulldozer available. He said yes, and when he was asked what it was needed for, he was told they just wanted to see if one was available in case there was extensive storm damage. When that crew member showed up at the holding area where the production kept all vehicles and equipment two days later, the lock to the gate was broken but nothing was missing. The bulldozer however was in a completely different spot and was covered in mud. What is bringing all of this together now is that the assistant director who was making all the calls is not receiving money from the actor any longer and has been talking to other people about selling the information he has about the woman and what happened.
Actor: Brad Pitt (at the time married to Jennifer Aniston)
Movie: "Troy" in 2004
Hurricane: The Greek seafront encampment was filmed at Playa El Faro Viejo (Old Lighthouse Beach), a couple of miles west of Cabo San Lucas itself. After most of the filming was completed, the walls of ‘Troy’ were substantially damaged by Hurricane Marty. With the climactic fight between Achilles and Hector still to shoot, the entire ‘gates of Troy’ set had to be rebuilt.

It came out at about the same time as Alexander, which was complete shit, and was unfairly grouped in with it.

It's a piss poor adaptation with a lot of faults, but I'll be damned if it isn't entertaining.

Pitt really nailed that fighting stance and technique.

Its a good movie. It has a really good fight scene.
