This is easily the best show airing on television right now. Will /tv/ be saved and propelled into a new LOST-esqe era? Anyone who isn't watching this needs to quit watching pleb-tier shows and catch up right now.

Gods be good, can you imagine how wicked awesome Lost would have been if they'd had their shit together and wrote this good? The flash-sideways written like last night's episode? Fucking hells...

everybody's wondering what and where they all came from
everybody's worrying where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done

Some say once gone you're gone forever

Some say that they're comin' back in a garden

I thought it was because the bird is killed by the Negress in attempts to resurrect it, the people who want to kill the bird have drunk the water, and thus have accepted their fate and want to kill the bird because it is a symbol of rebirth. But it sounded a bit iffy so I wanted someone elses opinion

the departure event only triggers the drama through which everyone is going and that you, as a viewer, are watching. there is not Lostian mystery aspect to it. the lack of answers to that event border on human faith or lack thereof in there being any answers. it's not SF mystery asspulling, it's religious parable making.

>“The Leftovers is a show based on a supernatural premise and although we want the storytelling to feel as grounded as possible, the presence of Patti after her death flirts directly with that premise. We knew when we designed the season that Kevin’s main thrust this year would be ridding himself of Patti and this episode was the culmination of that story. There are those who don’t like it when the show gets “too weird” and they are likely to assume this episode was all in Kevin’s head… an ongoing fever dream catalyzed by whatever Virgil made him drink… A further manifestation of the psychosis Laurie diagnosed.

>There are also those who will assign a supernatural interpretation to this episode. “Goddammit, here goes Lindelof with the Purgatory nonsense again… WE GET IT, ASSHOLE!”

>It is not our place to explain ourselves nor clarify this debate. The show has to speak for itself on this front. I make no apologies for this as Tom, the writers and I have always been upfront about the storytelling on this show being purposefully ambiguous… The Leftovers isn’t about answers, it’s about the frustration of not getting them and the emotional state that drives our characters to. Like throwing rocks through the windows of people we feel sympathy for or drinking poison.

>All that said, our intention here was simple. To try to do something different. And unexpected. And above all, emotional.

>And regardless of what people think of the writing and/or storytelling, I hope they can appreciate the incredible performances from Justin and Ann who committed to this fully and fearlessly… I am proud and honored to be the beneficiary of their immense talents.

>>62986329
Shitty plot devices are exactly that, it doesn't matter if it's religion or techno babble. You could do this easily without any of the disappearance bullshit, with any worldly cause for the loss of loved ones, but then people would hate the show, based on the fact that most of the characters are just constantly busy hurting without any cause by a higher power. And you would have to put in effort to make the hallucinations work, because people talking to themselves aren't really that entertaining.

Nobody knows why Nora did it, because she never said why. It's probably because Murphys fucked her brother over or because Nora hates people who blame everything on rapture. Probably a mix of both
>>62987342

but the Murphys don't blame anything on the rapture. in fact they're intent (or at least John is) to distance themselves from any departure or miracle related reasoning. it is only Erika's belief in this that is finally shaken, once her daughter seemingly disappears herself, in context with what she (Erika) did with the bird at the same time.

did you pick up the conversation from the very end? wtf.

I'm talking about him being oblivious to Virgil's plans or the outer-world dimension of what's to happen to Kevin.

Instead, he just picked up Kevin's body and buried him like 'yep, this guy's dead and grandpa blew his brains out, better clean up"
>>
>>62987581
are you dumb?
When Kevin shows up to virgil's Michael is leaving and it looks like hes been crying.
This is bc Virgil has told him what's going to happen, aka he's gonna die and probably won't be coming back.

When Kevin wakes up Michael's got like a chair and food set up like he's been waiting and watching. He was probably supposed to bury him and then wait for a pre-determined amount of time. It was probably more likely than not that Kevin wouldn't come back so it would be easiest to just bury him in advance. Or burying him may be part of the ritual who knows, but Michael obviously knew what was going on.
>>
based off of /tv/'s favorable reviews, I decided to check out the pilot.

Has Kevin seen and heard about the bird and its rebirth philosophy thing? Because if not, isn't that kind of proof that this isn't just happening in his mind, but it's actually something more?

Honestly I wish Lindelof would just get rid of Perotta at this point since he's the one who seems to keep the show in the "is it real or not" territory, effectively preventing the show to go all in with the mystery and take it to another level like Lost.
>>
>>62987737

That's probably because of Season 1, it wasn't something you might say was outstanding and should have won awards, but it did set up a lot of the themes that the show will continue to expand upon and explain. Season 2 has been GOAT so have a look at the ratings. Last episode was 9.7
>>
>>62988729
I watch it. The bullshit people talk about in these threads is beyond retarded. Like checking off talking points of exactly what lindelof wants people wondering.

When everyone, E V E R Y O N E, at this point, should know damned good and well lindelof is going to leave everything ambiguous because he knows he can't write anything remotely compelling.
>>
>>62989269
What the fuck is this even supposed to mean? We're talking about plot points and that triggers you? Do you even fucking watch Film & TV? It's hilarious that you think every other writer and director "unintentionally" creates something to hook audiences. At this point you may as well say that it's retarded Walter White secretly cooked meth and hid it from his family, and Michael Corleone shot a police chief in the face because they're "talking points"

Kevin had to destroy his pity to be free. It's from Dante's Inferno, right down to the guide named Virgil. Basically, to feel sorry for someone is to question god. Your pity for others suggests you think you know better than God. It's a really interesting concept.

not the guy you replied to, but Manhattan is seriously lacking this season. the show is missing something. the atomic bomb seems to have taken a backseat and personal drama started dominating the show. seriously, what human in the entire planet would put a good fuck as a priority before developing the weapon that can end the war. i doubt anyone would and i seriously doubt that fucking Oppenheimer would be an exception (same thing with the british fuck that wanted to leave the manhattan project because he got his feelings hurt by a girl). also, i could see that psyop coming a mile away.

Clearly TD Season 1 wouldn't go full on Cthulu, anyone could've seen it coming

Is God real? is a question with no real answer. It is unanswerable. Just like "where did the departed go?"

We live with no clear answers and this show demonstrates extremes of our everyday lives. As Patti said, "on October 14th, it became abundantly clear that you can lose anyone at any time"

But that is always true. Before during and after the 14th. It's a show about prescribed meaning and it handles it deftly.

But the last episode was the worst ever and the second season, in general, is much worse than the first.

Lindelof turned it into another disastrous season of Lost. That's why critics are eating it up now. It's more of the same le addictive binge watch trash.

Lindelof really is just an awful writer. Everything he touches is dogshit.
>>
>>62989930
Obviously he was gonna get mugged. I was surprised when he fought back and won. When he did get knocked out I figured he'd be late getting there.

It was less about those two cliche plot elements and more about how much more this episode made me love Matt. Something this season has been more iffy on.

Regardless last night was god damn amazing
>>
Remember that at the very start of the episode the camera/direction was lingering on that water the fat dork was examining at the small lake when the girls were teasing him.
He was testing the water and later we found he was selling it and black dad beat him up.

Anyway black dad's daughter filled a bottle at that little lake and brought it home with her and the direction deliberately showed everyone drinking from it when they were preparing food (can't confirm that they all drank it, maybe just the daughter did).

Later on the daughter disappears with her friends, who presumably drank from the bottle too.

Now in the "afterlife" there's a concept that people who drink the water there forget their former lives.

It's interesting to note that the water was pointed out in that first episode.

The only reason its a question is because people have been insisting god or gods exist for thousands of years.

>on October 14th, it became abundantly clear that you can lose anyone at any time

Which was bullshit, as that was the case before as well. The difference is the departening only happened once and gave no indication it would happen again.
>>
>>62989930
In a word: no. I will do no searching, no googling, no looking. You're a dipshit who comes to a thread to spew how predictable the show is. Why would I take actions you suggest I take? In the hopes that I, too, can become such a miserable prick that I may one day scour the Internet for signs of people enjoying something I myself claim not to enjoy and tell them how predictable it is and that I, I, MYSELF, GLORIOUS GENIUS ME predicted these things so that MAYBE anonymous strangers will validate my sad life? How fucking sad is that? Again: you are bad. You should feel bad. Your life is a sad thing.
>>
>>62986329
Exactly. If the show was about the geography club or the azriel doctors, we'd be heading for answers... But it isn't. More interesting is that there IS that Lost kinda show going on in the background... I love that there are congressional hearings about the departures and people making up entire carousels disappearing. It's not relevant to our story, like the answer to where they went isn't relevant to our story, It's just great workd-building.

"The sparrow, flying in at one door and immediately out at another, whilst he is within, is safe from the wintry tempest, but after a short space of fair weather, he immediately vanishes out of your sight, passing from winter to winter again. So this life of man appears for a
little while, but of what is to follow or what went before we know nothing at all."

Oh I got you it's a lets take normal people and put them in an extraordinary situation cliche.

It's bullshit just like LOST. They run you around introducing characters that do fuck all to the story other than to have pointless arcs and keeping you watching this garbage.

I instantly stop caring about a story so lazy as to not fully conceptualize it's world.

It's a lack finality that makes these stories so unrealistic.

The end to everyone's story is.... death. To deny that destroys any connection to the real world and it's audience.

>THEY VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE...... and we never found out why.. WINK!

Cheap just truly cheap.

>>
>>62990655
That isn't the hook though. They have flatly stated they WILL NOT explain the departure. Wouldn't that be an awful hook then?

The reaction to the god awful emotional trauma of not knowing is the hook. One you can actually share with the characters SINCE NONE OF YOU KNOW. There. See that? I know you love having things spoonfed to you.

Also: Muppets, Tuesdays, 9pm, ABC. Have a feeling you'll LOVE that one.
>>
>>62990718
"They don't spoonfeed me every answer so they haven't fully conceived their world" isn't valid criticism dipshit. It's invalid. As in "You are a mental invalid"
>>
>>62990721
s1 was contrived as fuck because nothing (except the lindelof OC) was believable to be happening 4 years later. Furthermore it was predictable as fuck.
>>
>>62990573

>>Implying there are most "twists" in S2 than S1
In s1, the story was completely fleshed and full. All of the twists are the result of story editing, not writing. My hopes for s2 are growing as the Aussie guy is being introduced... It bodes well for me.

>>Millions of people suddenly dissapear
Causing intense emotional trauma in at least five people you see daily.
>>Weird cult who smoke, why?
Because existience in the form of ego is only for suffering. Death is nothing to fear.
>>Weird cult who don't talk, why?
The dress in white and do not speak so that they become living reminders- of the 14th, of the fact that the old world is gone, that not all questions have answers, but mostly to become blank slates others project onto. Some call them "ghosts," some "stalkers," and nobody's wrong. The whole point is you see what you wanna see. The audience of the show and the world in the show has people who love them and would join them, like me and Meg, and people who loathed them, like earlier anon and guy screaming in Tommy's face.
>>Weird cult buying churches and recruitng, why?
Because everyone else is pretending. If you're tired of pretending, join us. No more faking it.

The GR's sorrity prank was on the 4th anniversary of the not-rapturening. The statue was unveiled on the 3rd. A tiny asian girl went from not pregnant to pregnant to giving birth to vanishing over the course of one season. Season 1 was a full year.
>>
>>62990901
No, it's active resent. Someone had to be thinking "i wish they were gone" as the mom in the car does before her baby, as nora does before her whole family, as laurie does before the fetus, as the group of bullies did for the boy they locked in the fridge, as the old lady on the floor did while her downs syndrome kid was making her count change one at a time on the floor...
>>
>>62987826
>>62987992

The show will eventually reveal that, there is nothing spiritual, or metaphysical about anything that's been happening. It's just what it is.

We will never know what's the deal with the departure. Things will remain ambiguous, just like life itself.
>>
>>62990906
>>62990777

I'm not entirely sure he was a fraud. I'm guessing you say this because Laurie told Kevin that they made up the entire thing, but I believe that's only what she thought, she didn't know that's what actually happened. We even saw Wayne in the bathroom, the child left for Tom, even Meg fucked him presumably for the same reason that Wayne had a bunch of Asian women in pregnancy. When Laurie is in the house she sees the picture with the baby, perhaps a realization that the story was in fact true? I could be wrong though, have I missed a painfully obvious scene where it's explained he's just a hackfraud?
>>
>>62991016
>no one actively wishes a pedophile was gone

uh huh. the show goes through several cases where resent could not have been the cause and shows cases where people who were resented were not disappeared.
