So when I was in eighth grade I read two books about the Marines: Jarhead and Generation Kill. Generation Kill seemed way more appealing in that a lot of the Marines regarded it as a brotherhood, Ray Person was hilarious, and in general it seemed like the brotherhood and camaraderie I was looking for at the time. On the other hand, Jarhead was basically about how the military is a scam, pretty much everybody in the Marines is a piece of shit who only did it because they couldn't do anything else, and that war is boring and depressing as fuck (not even because of the war part of it, mostly the not knowing what's going on at home and boredom part of it).

seriously though family, if you use the wrong kind of super-plasticizers in a concrete mix, you can severely fuck up the foundations of a building. especially one as large as the hospital he was working on. that kind of thing affects people's lives in case of a natural disaster or severe weather. just for the sake of protecting people's lives, you can see why it mattered so damn much to him to get it right.

make sure you know for a fact what you want to do with your education before you start, I switched majors from pre-med to pre-law because I realized I liked talking about the law and crime a lot more than I enjoyed biology, now I'm paying for a few semesters on my own dime to make up for it
don't go to a community college if you can help it, from my experience the girls there all seem still have their boyfriends from highschool, go to a 4 year college where girls go to be single sluts right off the bat
but yes it is worth it, being in the military is shit. Now I choose when I eat, when I sleep, how and when I go lift weights and exercise. My gains have gone through the roof. Some of the girls are too young, but not the way you might think. This 10/10 who just graduated high school was initially hitting on me but later turned me down when she found out I was almost 10 years older than she was. She was over 18 so I was fine with it but not every girl goes for an older guy, shocking because that was the first time that has happened for me.
