It's not an inconsistency. It's a terrible decision made by a terrible director in an attempt to liven up a franchise that by all measures should be tame when setting up the framework for the epic OT.
It's the same reason you don't see a 60 year old Alec Guiness doing backflips and lightsaber boomerang throws when he first fights Vader. Sometimes less is more.
