Why did they fuck with the backstory? Teleportation gates made by scientists open up into Hell, the space marine(s) need to rip and tear their guts.
Instead we got something about a virus that unlocks the evil gene and turns you into things that just happen to look like Doom 3 enemies or... something.

I was genuinely spooked when I saw the first Resident Evil movie when it came out. I watched it again few months ago and it wasn't scary at all, but I still enjoyed it. How come it didn't have gore? I think with gore it could've been a classic zombie movie.
