It wasn't sci-fi, it was symbolism. A lot of the events and images in this movie aren't meant to be taken literally. It's all about his fear of settling down and committing to a wife and a family, struggling with his weaker side that can't resist his sexual impulses and need for excitement.
Spiders are a visualization of that fear, they represent his wife, or just the general idea of commitment. Spiders catch you in their web, tie you down so you can't move, and drain you. The main character is terrified by the idea that settling down and raising children will do exactly that - tie him down, and drain the life out of him. His whole affair with the younger woman is a last desperate attempt to explore his options, play with the idea that he might just leave it all behind and keep living as a free man.
