Star Trek Thread: Bad Haircuts Edition
I'm beginning Season 3 of DS9 and when does Sisko get interesting? From what I gather, DS9 is the most character driven Trek, but so far, Sisko is the most mundane character. It honestly feels like he's just reading off a teleprompter at times.
>>62914611
Sisko is the most pathetic when Edinger out acts him comparing the federation to the borg.
>>62914611
He gets interesting when he stops trying to fight the Prophets making him do shit and starts being Space Jesus. Which, actually, I'm pretty sure is right around Season 3.
>>62914611
Later on when his values start to be challenged and his back is up against the wall. He's still one of the more boring characters though.
Friendly reminder that Dukat did nothing wrong.
Friendly reminder that Ro Laren is best trekfu
>>62914860
Dukat was a str8 cunt, senpai.
>>62914860
Dukat didn't exterminate the Bajorans when he had the chance.
>>62914807
The. Stilted. Way. That. He spoke his. Lines. always annoyed the shit out of me.
He seemed to be a pretty bad Starfleet officer but a good leader.
>>62914872
I just can't get over Kira. She has such a nice smile.
>>62914966
>>62914675
Neat! I'm loving Odo so far. Actually, I'm really liking most of the main/recurring cast. Kira is a bit weak as well, which is ironic because my favorite character in TNG was Ro Laren.
>>62914872

>>62914966

>>62915531
the part of Kira on DS9 was written for Ro, but the actress wanted to pursue a movie career or something
itt we removeone thing from everytrek show to make it infinitely better
TOS : "we're reusing the spare sets from some other show" episodes
TNG : Troi
DS9 : bajorans
Voy : Neelix
Ent : Mayweather
>>62915444

Mayweather was just boring though, he never actively made the show worse like the other stuff on your list did.
Also the TOS episodes where they do reuse stuff from other shows, like the Mafia or Nazi or Gunfight at the OK Corral episodes, were pretty great.

Yeah, for those of us who have been ragging on her for years, that news story was more of an inevitability than a surprise.
I also don't expect it to be the last time we see her in the news.
I really liked Kes's sudden sexy hair (and bodysuits) a few episodes before she left.
It seems a strange choice that that happened for such a short time, but I liked it. Made her look like a completely different person.
>>62916992

How is a bunch of old men in pyjamas in wobbling chairs entertaining?
Why is the bridge in TNG so basic compared to other ones. It's made of fucking wood.
>>62917269
>>62917370
Because that is what the future looked like in the late 80's.
>>62917269
Well, since you asked so nicely...
>>62917466
But even the TOS version looked more modern and futuristic
>>62917370
To differentiate it from the bridge of the Original and the Enterprise A, which were more like a naval vessel, with blinking lights and buttons everywhere.
Michael Okuda opted from smooth lines and touch panels.
Also wood is fine for a ships bridge, since it brings it back to its maritime roots of sailing and exploration. Not to mention that the enterprise D is a luxury vessel when compared to everything else you see in starfleet.
>>62917559
TNG looks at lot more sleek and realistically futuristic to me...
>>62917559
60s sci-fi was hopeful and bright
By the 80s, we expected people to never change and for everything in the future to be a bit shit
>>62917559
Well they used up all the paint, so TNG had to go with the plywood ship.
>>62917370
The use of wood isn't basic, it's stylish It's not like all the other sets weren't made out of wood anyway, just painted to look like some sort of nondescript plastic or metal.
I imagine that big wooden curved thing behind the captain's chair was probably a big deal to make.
>>62917623
>I imagine that big wooden curved thing behind the captain's chair was probably a big deal to make.
Unless you live in a universe where you could replicate a perfectly stained and sealed piece of wood.
>>62917559
>more modern
Half of it looks like cheap vacuum molded plastic.
>>62917663
I mean for the set builders.
In-universe it's obviously a stylistic flourish.
>>62917370
Everything was wood or brown in the 80's man.
>>62917707
Gotcha, I read into it wrong.
>>62917718
Also minimalism.
>>62917559
TOS bridge was the best. It was the most aesthetically pleasing and functional. Why would you trust touch screen controls over mechanical ones?

The plot is inconsequential. Star Trek IV is great because it doesn't take itself seriously, and it milks the cast chemistry for all its worth. Easily the most entertaining and rewatchable of the Trek film.
>>62917808
All the OT movies are pretty good. Even V, because everything about that movie was a train wreck. Seriously, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Urban as Bones is great, probably the best casting, but unfortunately he's wasted in nu-Trek since they don't want it to just be about the antics of three important white dudes and their unimportant colleagues, so they shun Bones in favour of Uhura.

Kinda agree with Neelix. I still wondering how the fuck he ans Kes were together if she was in the underground and it was sealed off and nobody found their way back who made it to the surface. The Tuvix episode was pretty based also the episode where Tuvok has brain damage and Neelix helps him out. Other than that Neelix is mostly meh.

I liked Nemesis better than Insurrection.
Nemesis had the makings of a good movie, but so many things went wrong (slashed budget, director who couldn't get along with the actors, Brent Spiner writing...)
>>62919910
>I liked Nemesis better than Insurrection.
That doesn't mean much, Insurrection is the lowest Star Trek ever got.

>>62918387

>>62920025
Final Frontier didn't try. It was just Shatner rubbing his dick all over the camera. Expecting anything from it would be a big mistake.
Into Darkness is mostly shit because you have seen Wrath of Khan.
Insurrection has shit action, a bad plot full of holes, is so bad at defending its moral and ethical message that it needs to hamfist its counterarguments and even then the "good guys" are arguably wrong on every front. The ideas behind it had potential to make something good and ruined everyhting. A failed potential is much worse than no potential at all.

I guess what I liked about Insurrection was that out of all the TNG movies it captured the TNG feeling the most
>Picard giving speeches about morals and ethics
>everyone in the cast gets a part unlike the others where it's all just Picard/Data
>the cast is clearly having fun and enjoying themselves

The only Trek movie I unironically like is 1.
2 is okay although I don't care about Khan at all and the rest go to often into goofy territory and border on self-parody.
In 1 and 2 at least they tried to play it straight.
>>62919479
This is what makes Janeway so good.
I've seen people outraged at the fact that in Equinox she was going to let a starfleet officer be murdered because he wouldn't tell her the intel she needed, only to be stopped by Chakotay at the last second. I thought that was one of her finest moments--she'd kill someone to save her crew.

I like how Voyager and the Enterprise-E were designed around the same time, independent of each other, and both coincidentally featured reduction of the "neck"
I mean they don't look so alike on the surface, the Enterprise E looks kinda like a sports shoe to me with all the detail on it, and its nacelles looked nothing like they do in the TV shows, but still the evolution of the general shape, the merging of the engineering and saucer section... it's the natural step to take in making a sleeker, more coherent design.
