What a shame - Peter Jackson definitely has talent, as seen with LOTR. I wholly blame the studio for pressure and time constraints on him and his team. The Hobbit trilogy isn't bad, but it could have been so, so, so much better and I believe it could have been.

I think it'd be good for him to maybe hit up the indie scene and do some small-scale projects like in his early career. I don't think he ever wanted to be this generation's David Lean, and since The Hobbit is easily the greatest failure of his career it might be good for him to get back into things with something small to find his voice again.
But you can't compare him to George Lucas. George was in complete control, had all the time and money he needed and hadn't directed a movie for like twenty years. George fucked up because he was out of touch with what it was that made his franchise great.

I read the Hobbit at 9, then LOTR a couple years later in 1998. In fact the edition's of LOTR I read had an ad page in the back saying something like "Look for Lord of The Rings movies coming soon from New Line Cinema"
LOTR turned out good, and as a fan I thought it would be nice to see The Hobbit made into a movie. I did see the first hobbit movie and it wasn't great. Then I saw the preview for the second one and didn't watch it, repeat for the third. After seeing this video I'll probably go ahead and never watch them.
I see a comment ITT, and have seen ones like it in others, about them hopefully redeeming themselves with a silmarillion movie. Personally I'd rather they just stop now. Thankfully, after how The Hobbit turned out, the remaining tolkein family who control the rights are apparently pretty reluctant to sell anymore movie rights.
