What a shame - Peter Jackson definitely has talent, as seen with LOTR. I wholly blame the studio for pressure and time constraints on him and his team. The Hobbit trilogy isn't bad, but it could have been so, so, so much better and I believe it could have been.

Oh well. Maybe one day, we'll get The Silmarillion.

Remember when Peter Jackson was Peter Jackson? I still can't believe the NZ government had him killed because they thought Bad Taste and Dead Alive were reflecting poorly on their country.

I'm sure everyone knows the man you see in public is just an actor, and the actual "brains" behind "Peter's" "movies" are the collected "efforts" of George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg.

what do kiwis think of the travesty that is hobbit trilogy? as far as i know, jackson is a national hero over there, and lord of the rings is a pretty big deal. i heard they give tours of the shire which they've preserved over the years. i would imagine it must be pretty embarrassing to watch the icon of your nation be reduced to a joke.
>>
Daily reminder that he had no idea what he was doing with LoTR either and he made pipeweed (nicotiana) into marijuana, is responsible for LSD Galadriel, and made Gimli, a deadly serious character, into a laughingstock.

Shit. At least Jackson admitted it. It takes a lot to come forward with a mulitmilion dollar production -- after the fact -- and basically say "the quality that you were expecting from our first trilogy just wasnt there fans"

>>
Lucas doesn't have the kind of self awareness that would let him acknowledge failures the way Jackson has.

Like, the Hobbit is this generations Star Wars Prequels, but I respect him admitting they're not good and explaining why.
>>
Jackson had 3 years to prepare for LOTR, he had a a day to prepare for the Hobbit
He was just thrown in there and told to film with what was prepared by Del Taco.
I doubt any Director could have done any better with these circumstances.

such a shame because if Jackson was on board originally and was given the time he needed then the Hobbit would have been LOTR level.
>>
>>62903720

>agrees to do three films for absolutely no reason
wrong, he was owed $100 million from LOTR so was told he would get this if he filmed the Hobbit.

>implying he has anyone to blame but himself
wrong, the Hobbit and its additional bullshit was added by Del Toro, not Jackson.
>>
>>62903809

>>
>>62903773

I think Jackson can bounce from this, but he can't just blame Del Toro for leaving and the studio. Hopefully the Tin-Tin sequel will be good.

Peter Jackson is so fucking stupid.

not for the films, they are fine and way better than what I could come up wiht!

but for this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting

Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, and his studio Wingnut Films, brought a lawsuit against New Line Cinema after an audit. Jackson stated this is regarding "certain accounting practices". In response, New Line stated that their rights to a film of The Hobbit were time-limited, and since Jackson would not work with them again until the suit was settled, he would not be asked to direct The Hobbit, as had been anticipated.[17] Fifteen actors are suing New Line Cinema, claiming that they have never received their 5% of revenue from merchandise sold in relation to the movie, which contains their likeness.[18] Similarly, the Tolkien estate sued New Line, claiming that their contract entitled them to 7.5% of the gross receipts of the $6 billion hit.[19] According to New Line's accounts the trilogy made "horrendous losses" and no profit at all

and then he goes back to them to do the hobbit. HES SUEING A WB subsidiary FFS

No they had their fucking A-game for LoTR.
>>
Ask yourself, if jackson hadn't signed on to do it, who would warner bros have picked??
>>
>>62903849
I think it'd be good for him to maybe hit up the indie scene and do some small-scale projects like in his early career. I don't think he ever wanted to be this generation's David Lean, and since The Hobbit is easily the greatest failure of his career it might be good for him to get back into things with something small to find his voice again.
>>
But you can't compare him to George Lucas. George was in complete control, had all the time and money he needed and hadn't directed a movie for like twenty years. George fucked up because he was out of touch with what it was that made his franchise great.

I'm glad to hear that there was a reason The Hobbit was so bad. When I was watching them I felt like Peter was personally telling me to fuck myself. I'm glad to hear that's not the case, and I hope he gets back to making good movies some day.
>>
Wouldnt go as far as "George Lucas". George had everything he wanted and SW prequels are still worse than Hobbit movies.

Well maybe just the first two, five armies was a SW prequel level sadly, even had its own Jar Jar..
>>
>literally just making it up as he went along

>>62902970
This.

None of it was Jackson's fault.

Honestly after Del Toro left he was the only one who could have even salvaged the films under the tight restraints of the producers (etc).

It's pretty obvious he felt he had no other option, and he genuinely regrets how he came into being director.
>>
>>62905154
Not to mention that LOTR was a collaborative effort that spanned at least five or six years, and Peter Jackson can actually listen to people and be part of a team - and with the Hobbit his hand was forced on the whole thing because Del Toro bailed and fucked everything up. Blame the studio, not Jackson.

George Lucas's orginal star wars films were excellent because he was FORCED (ha) to work with editors, producers, cinematographers etc to fix the shambling mess that was his original vision, but when he was given time, money and complete control he utterly fucked up everything because the original Star Wars trilogy is actually a collaborative effort between him and people more talented that he ever was.

TL;DR - Jackson thrives in a team environment and given the right time and money, produces incredible films. George Lucas is the polar opposite.
>>
>>62905420
>Blame the studio, not Jackson.

Yeah Jackson was under duress to agree to a project he knew would lack planning stages.

Blame Jackson.
>>
>>62905453
well if Jackson didn't accept the films would probably have never been made so there was a lot of pressure on him desu

>make something poorly
>dont make anything

really not a decision at all senpai if youre going the integrity route. he wanted the money and he got the money. weird thing is hes already rich as fuck.

maybe he felt he could accomplish it without compromising it, even if he was rushed.
>>
>>62905492
its not just his money, but the money the studio would make and the actors and everyone involved, as well as all the fanboys who were desperate to have a Hobbit film

there was a lot of interests who wanted the films to be made, if he refused the project would have fallen through and caused lots of butthurt
>>
>>62905514
yeah thats true. in that respect its noble to give others work, the fanboys dont get served by giving them something crappy.

jackson really shouldve used his power to get it done right. i dont see top level executives arguing with mr lotr if push comes to shove.

but maybe they were struggling financially and needed a quick product iuno
>>
>>62905453
better jackson had made them rather than someone like brett ratner.

anyway this news kind of gives a bit of explanation as to why there was a shit ton of cgi. lack of planning probably meant they were missing a lot of costumes and other props. easier to delay that stuff for post production when you have a strict shooting schedule. feels bad man. bad for us because we wanted good hobbit films. bad for jackson because he probably wanted good hobbit films too.
>>
>>62903021
Fuck you cunt
>>
I'm really glad this news has come to light. I was under the impression that the films were so poor because Jackson just didn't want to make them but you can see it on his face and everything he says that he was truly disappointed himself because and did what he could

Why? Del Toro doesn't even like LOTR. He literally hated the original LOTR books, said they were so boring he couldn't even finish the first one. The Hobbit he said he was able to read, but he hated it anyway. Also it's not like he's that talented, Pan's Labyrinth is the only good thing he ever did and even that had glaring flaws.

>Temple of Doom

one thing that always tickled my autism about temple being set before raiders is that when the guys start juggling their sabers and indy reaches for his gun and grins awkwardly when it isn't there - well that's obviously a callback to the scene in raiders where it's just one guy. THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! IF TEMPLE IS SET BEFORE RAIDERS! THE OTHER THING HASN'T EVEN HAPPENED YET!

i know it's a meta thing but still, it seems like indy is thinking the same thing as the audience, but in reality he wouldn't

so that's when i dropped the series. haven't watched crusade or skull to this day
>>
>>62908770
Or, you know, it could just be a recurring situation even before Temple of Doom. I feel like Indy bumps into primitive cultures where a gun gives him the edge all the time, it's bound to keep happening.

>>
Call me a massive faggot if you will, but after watching these interviews I shed actual tears.

I read the Hobbit at 9, then LOTR a couple years later in 1998. In fact the edition's of LOTR I read had an ad page in the back saying something like "Look for Lord of The Rings movies coming soon from New Line Cinema"

LOTR turned out good, and as a fan I thought it would be nice to see The Hobbit made into a movie. I did see the first hobbit movie and it wasn't great. Then I saw the preview for the second one and didn't watch it, repeat for the third. After seeing this video I'll probably go ahead and never watch them.

I see a comment ITT, and have seen ones like it in others, about them hopefully redeeming themselves with a silmarillion movie. Personally I'd rather they just stop now. Thankfully, after how The Hobbit turned out, the remaining tolkein family who control the rights are apparently pretty reluctant to sell anymore movie rights.

All of this was clear the moment they were aiming for another trilogy.

seems like when del burrito left they should have folded production entirely, not just drop another director in and keep going. they were fucked immediately and seems like they all knew it. I don't get why they didn't just tell the studio to fuck off and take a couple of years to get their shit together before shooting. maybe new line would've sued the shit out of them and ended up owning WETA or something - or maybe everyone was more interested in getting paid than worrying about the movies coming out a bit shitty
