Wasn't Gandalf supposed to have walked middle earth for "900 lives of men" or some shit. That's like 5000 years. Wasn't this scene supposed to happen about 3000 years before FOTR? Where the hell was Gandalf? What was he doing the whole time? Did Elrond tell him that Isildur had the ring? Once Isildur got killed and the ring lost, did Gandalf just give up and go smoke weed all day instead of looking for it?

A better question would have been in what way did the ring Orchestrate the events that brought down Isildur. The ring wanted to survive to save its master. It convinced the one fifth elf man thing that it'd make him a god and at its earliest convenience it stiffed him with a shank and fell into a lake where it stayed until Gollum.

The spirit of the dark lord resides in the ring as it does in the orcs he employs. It's any wonder that the two found each other. The Valinorean elves could have taken on Ar-Pharazon, but it would have been at an incredibly great, unnecessary loss of life, and probably would have trashed half of Valinor if the War of Wrath is any indication. The Valar also didn't want elves and men to fight, as they were both the children of Iluvatar and their wellbeing was desired by all the Valar, and likewise refused to step in for the aforementioned reasons. The Valar had no choice but to either genocide the children of Iluvatar and live with that guilt forever, while trashing the undying lands, and potentially causing the deaths of innumerable elves as well, or to appeal to Eru himself, because they simply didn't know what to do. They didn't know Eru was gonna fuck Ar-Pharazon's shit up, they just wanted their problem gone with minimal bloodshed and destruction, and that's what they got.
