Not every widescreen film uses the same aspect ratio as your tv natively displays. When this is the case, the only way to display a complete image is to use black bars. When tv broadcasters choose to completely fill the screen as to not have those bars, some information will be lopped of on either side.
Conversely, you'll notice when older movies are modified for widescreen tv broadcast, sometimes the top and bottom of the image will just be cut off so the screen is completely filled. If the complete image from a 4:3 aspect ratio source is shown on a widescreen 1080p tv you'll get black bars on the sides instead of the top and bottom.
