the problem is that from a narrative standpoint in earlier seasons the range of topics they could parody had a much wider distribution due to the lack of interconnectedness between episodes. Starting and Following characters and plots over multiple episodes allows for larger buildup, but ultimately it is different from the Southpark we knew:
There is simply less space for wacky characters and twists to crop up, and the field of view for the writers is narrowed.
I think, they should find a median between this new overarching plot and recurring characters on one side, and the seperate but whole episode style they used to produce.
Basically this has always been cool: Multi Part Episodes were popular, but they weren't a thing for prolonged durations of time, as the novelty of parodying one topic ad infinitum ad nauseum will wear off pretty fast.
