I was going to post Black Moon, also by Malle, but then I thought it wasn't really a Frenchie French movie. Then I thought I'd post The Fire Within and I remembered what the OP was. I'm retarded.

La Grande Illusion, to be honest with you family.
I really liked Le Salaire de la Peur even though the beginning was slow in my opinion. But when they are actually in the truck, damn that was great.

I've been interested in it too, the concept sounds interesting.
I just finished watching Breathless not long ago, some nice scenes in there and a really cool movie as a whole.

It's quite weird and has a loose oneiric style. If you're looking for story or any conventional narrative, it's definitely not for you. I liked it because it's one of the few films that I thought nicely recreates the confusion and disorder of dreams. Somewhere between Bunuel and Dali.
Surrealism is a favourite style of mine, any good French films that use it exceptionally well?
La haine is pretty good
also it kinda make you expect the shit that is going on in France right now
99 francs is also pretty good, even though it's a little bit too flashy for my liking

I think an argument can be made for Italy: De Sica, Fellini, Antonioni, Rossellini, Bertolucci etc...
