So I'm applaying to film school next year and I want to ask that what kind of people can I expect over there. Is it a place of full of plebs or asshole contrarians?
>>
>>62806354
Yes it is, and you have to suppress your power level a lot. Remember, the "artists" of today are the mainstream, not the other way around. So don't expect them to be interested in truly subversive material within film. Don't expect them to appreciate the skill involved in creating a perfect shot. They're much more interested in posturing socially while using film as their tool to do so. Try and focus on what they teach you and filter out all the shit.

It levels out eventually, film students start calming down at around their third year studying. But you'll hear a lot of stupid shit along the way.

So I'm not applying to film school, I'm applying to film

This is ancient, from a film club thread. This pic is why you don't go to any film club but one that you monitor.
>>
>>62806725
I still can't figure out what this could be for. They clearly aren't watching all these movies since it says they are one hour blocks. Quick presentations about your favorite movie? Wouldn't that just spoil a lot of movies for people though? And what else do they do with their day if they have 5 presentations every 1 hour class? What are they even learning? Is this for a speech class? Why do I care?

Yes you can; one film a night, every school night. A club doesn't need to be attended every meeting. The schedule would be impossible if it was a class.

Anyway yeah, go ahead and get some Criterion films (Wes Anderson's a good bet) and try and blend in. Search out the ones with legitimately good ideas, and get in close with them.

This has got to be from some pleb normie student film club. No way anyone actually interested something to the point of pursuing a career within the field would even consider screening fucking Transformers or The Amazing Spider-man.

How would you guys make a film club that isn't shit?

>Have at least ten friends
>Clearly state on campus ads that you approve all films before showing
>say any film can be put forward
>objective is to find movies that are novel, unexpected, or affecting
>have five movies lined up, no more than two can be ludicrously art house
>try to tow the lines between shit, pretentiously obscure, and generic film club bait

Would this get immediately shot down for >muh freedom muthafucka >no taste bullying?
>>
>>62806725

>>
>>62807537
I'd join it, but some special snowflake would start sperging until you loosen up the rules. Then the club would be shit and I would abandon you family.
>>
>>62807537
I'd join, but only if that was pretty strictly upheld.

I'm not in college, just theorizing because I never encountered a decent film club in my life. I was relatively soft in my youth, letting other people's opinions effect groups. Now I know college kids are too spoiled and sensitive and must be bullied into compliance if they want to have a meaningful group experience.

>>62807660
Nope, I called out bullshit all the time. I never let girlfriends, even my own, into anything that could even approximate a club.
>>
>>62806354
don't do it
do not fucking do it

>>
>>62807824
Wait for him to say if he has a major planned. If he has a very specific list of trades, film school is fine. If he wants to go for theory and managerial stuff, like directing, he should just go to normal school.
>>
>>62807197
yes this is more like it
>>
>>62806354
Just go to a theatre and watch films, it's way cheaper familia
>>
>>62806354
Depends on the person. You'll get three or four a year who are worth their shit while they're in film school and three or four who have a shitty enough experience that on the far side they end up being just as capable thanks to baptism by fire, but for the most part you've got girls doing it for the Honors program kinda thing who don't have the time to actually do anything (and because they're in the Advanced courses, the implication is they had boring studious childhoods and nothing interesting to actually say in a movie) and some plebby dudes with high aspirations for artfucking but who when pressed for output turn violet and insist their art is their art.

Otherwise, it's basically just a scattershot degree in pamphleteering, proletariat empathy, and your run of the mill Marxism.
>>
>>62807866
A director should know everything there is to know about movie making, they have to go to film school.

>>
>>62806354
i didnt go to a film specific school but i took 2 film classes because they were piss easy electives and i got to watch good movies every class.

the gist i got from the majority of the RTF student body was that they are all a bunch of cringey try hards that only like things that they think they are supposed to like. for example we watched Casablanca and when the professor announced that we would be viewing it there were little ooooo's and excitedly whispered yes's. i understand that the film is valued for its superior cuts for its time but its not THAT good of a movie and i find it hard to believe that those students actually were that excited to watch it.

just my opinon

Nyu, USC, UCLA. If you don't get into one of those then don't waste your money on a useless film degree
>>
>>62810718
yeah somewhere else. there's no point in studying film anymore when you can download any textbook or movie on your own. you won't get any new insight. if you want a career in film then move to California and grind like everyone else

>>
>>62810718
dont' listen to these keks any film school is fine. they do not care about your major or your experience in a class. they only care about the work you put out and the quality. going to film school for the technical and hands on experience is a big plus. it isn't necessary either. just go out and make films don't let anyone tell you any different. it's all about your own personal approach.
