daily reminder that this premise makes zero sense if you think about it for a bit

I never understood how it wasn't deemed stupid, but I'm a linguistics expert and assumed my feelings were much like a neckbeard seeing a guy playing Doom on TV with sound effects from Quake playing over it, causing him to sperg out.

>he thinks alien biology and evolution have to be like human biology and evolution
You, when the spaghetti spilled.
>>62802721
the premise is taken to an absolute extreme (ALL of their language is metaphors and allusions) but it makes perfect sense
imagine someone who's never been on the internet coming on 4chan and hearing about the expressions "dropped my spaghetti," "he does it for free", "hothead", "ayy lmao", "remove kebab" etc. These are all basically the same form of communication as the aliens have - repeated expressions harkening back to something culturally significant and have now become just as recongisable in expressing that same idea.

Anon, his waist wide.
>>62803599
yes but you can't express complicated statements with those. those are all ciphers for emotions, kinds of people. like i said, you can't write a warp drive manual with that shit.

>the premise is taken to an absolute extreme
Not the same guy. Since this is sci-fi so I can fully accept this premise in a show like TNG. This is one of the best episodes of the show, imo.
>>62803714
Not with human brain wiring you can't. But with an alien species with a totally different and unique physiology? It's plausible.
>>62802721
Of course. The point, I guess, is that all language is representational and not the thing itself; all language is a metaphor.
How do they teach their children what their metaphors mean?
How did this alien species go around space for so long without encountering a non-metaphor language race? These aliens were literally the only ones the Federation had come across with this baffling type of communication.
>>62803935
>How do they teach their children what their metaphors mean?
How do humans teach their kids to speak and know the meanings of words? Their brains are simply wired in a way that that is the simplest form of communication for them.
>How did this alien species go around space for so long without encountering a non-metaphor language race?
An unusual and unique set of circumstances allowed them to evolve a brain chemistry that communicated in metaphor. It's like the flea on the back of a dog: just because we can't necessarily comprehend something doesn't mean it's impossible.

This is what you all sound like to normies when you spout your shitty memes.
Just think that there could be a society of humans that only communicate through memes in the future.

My problem with it is that their 'words' themselves are made out of other words which are unexplained. If everything is metaphor, then what is 'wall' defined as in 'when the walls fell'? Is there another metaphor corresponding to 'wall'? 'Temba, His Arms Wide' means 'generosity', but what means 'arm' or 'wide'?

best episode of trek, family.
Gul Dukat was the best villain, I would've liked an episode of TNG where he coincidentally appeared
>>62810399
He was another Cardassian (not Dukat) in "The Wounded" tho
and he pretty much acted the same way

It's basically the same character, just different name because of writing credits. Same with Tom Paris/Nick Loncardo.
