Reminder that there are multiple styles of using a lightsaber, and Kylo's is probably specifically suited to taking advantage of the crossguard - most likely by using it to allow him to make much more offensive-based motions that a standard style would permit because of his extra safety net. For instance, he goes for an uppercut, shifts so the opposing blade catches and then slides off the crossguard, avoiding the classic lightsaber lock, all while he twists his body and successfully pokes the opposing jedi with his unlimited power energy beam.

I am happy to see that it at least has some sort of explanation. The closer we get to see the thing and how unstable it is, the more it makes sense. Still don't know why you wouldn't point them up instead of out to the sides.
Why does it need to be explained? It's FICTION, and it's there because it looks cool and maybe to keep Han from being able to whip it out of Kylo Ren's had because he's really Luke Skywalker so he knows Han is Indy.

Rey turns Sith because she deeply resents the jedi and she becomes one by the second film (end of the first). This is shown throughout ep7. She also has this weird, lonely condescending attitude to her.

Nothing in Star Wars has ever depicted lightsabers correctly. You don't NEED power behind them to cut. Simply touching one will fuck you up, so you could lazily slide one through somebody and they'd still get cut in half.
Granted in fights you have to hit harder to overpower your opponent, but when fighting against anyone without a lightsaber you don't need to reel back to get power behind your blow. Just flick your wrist around with the lightsaber touching them and they're in 5 pieces.
But that doesn't look as epic, so they don't do it that way.
