Because Kirkman said they were going to expand his character in the show because the comic death left a bad taste in his mouth. So far he's had LESS focus than his comic counterpart. Abraham should be a commander in All Out War. Glenn, Morgan, or Daryl are all that makes sense to me.

And Kirkman already said he just kinda wings it in the comics, especially since the show started airing and getting traction. Then they iron a few things out later. The problem with Shane was that basically nothing happened the entire season. He just sat around brooding and only in the last episode or two does he ever actually act on anything. It still had a decent resolution and impacted how the group and Rick behaved.
The problem now, is that they introduce these characters to clash with Rick who leave after one or two episodes. The wife beating drunk, the guy who doesn't like Rick's plan for the quarry, etc. Who gives a shit about any of this? It doesn't lead anywhere, it doesn't mean anything, it doesn't change group dynamics in the slightest.
