The relationship between Frank and Jordan (his wife) is one of the best shown in media in a long time. More considering that he was a criminal/gangster, so they could have gone with the cliche of him cheating on her, her unhappy and probably cheating as well, her only in it for the money. That's what made the scene in the desert the best of S2, and as good as anything in S1.

I liked Season 1 more, because it was better focused on the character (since it only had two mains) and the story felt more solid, instead of "IT ALL CONNECTS" last minute twist.
However, Farrell did a very good job and I liked him in this very much.

I personally thoroughly enjoyed.
The pacing was good, and the acting as well, the writing was convoluted and confusing some times but if you payed enough attention it you can see it's actually good.
It gets even better on a rewatch.
Funny thing is that i heard a lot of people saying season 2 was shit outside of /tv/, i guess most of the haters are just crossposter, that'd explain a lot.

The amount of denial from season 2 apologists is astounding. Pizzaman wrote the first season for like 20 years, the second in sixth months. The loss of Fukunaga was enormous and resulted in no visual style that wasn't aping the first season. Farrell was the only actor capable of selling the pulpy dialogue, the rest made it sound silly most of the time. The plot was utter nonsense. Ray getting shot was one of the biggest fuck you cliffhanger resolutions ever. I would keep going but I know I will never be able to reach the people making the mental backflips to say season 2 is better than season 1.

The way he got caught was pretty stupid, but my biggest gripe with the scene itself was that it felt out of place and poorly directed. For one, it shouldn't have been split up among all the other scenes that were happening at the same time, it would've been more powerful as a single long scene. Other thing is as I said, it just felt out of place. We hadn't really seen much of his past and they're suddenly laying it all on us right before he's killed off. If there had been more of that previously in the show it would've felt more natural. Another thing is, while the acting here was really good, the lines were pretentious as all hell, it was so unnatural that it was really hard to take seriously and pretty much just took me out of the experience.
Basically this whole scene was just a neat idea that was executed terribly.
Ray's death was way more powerful, it didn't have any of these issues, and he's just straight up a much more likeable and sympathetic character. His death was also foreshadowed and built up to pretty well and they did an amazing job in that last episode at creating an uneasy atmosphere that, even when things were going right, you had the worst fucking feeling that something bad is going to happen.

I loved S2, it really grew on me. Colin and especially Vince Vaughn impressed me over the season, and Ani is my waifu. Post-industrial desolation in America's Gomorrah felt cozy somehow.

I don't think so. None of Paul's threads go anywhere because he himself is incapable of resolving them. He hates who he is too much to actually fix his life.
He's the antecedent of Ray and Ani. His death tells us early on why certain people in this season live and others die. So Paul is a bit of a thematic crutch, but I still enjoyed his story a lot.
