What makes this meme director considered good comedy?

His movies are like the Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date movie parodies of the eastern world. Is it just because it's not english that makes it good?

>>
I used to like Stephen Chow until Dragonball Evolution. That faggot was the main reason that film was made, but he refused to direct or write it because it wasn't an original production (yet he made a movie adapting Journey To The West...). Dragonball Evolution probably would have been great had he been the one who made it.

My bad, he directed a movie called Journey to the West, he was in two movies called A Chinese Odyssey, which has Journey to the West characters
>>
>>62733307
You need to understand Cantonese to enjoy his movies because 90% if his puns are in Cantonese.
So I don't really understand how English speakers could consider his movies funny at all.

There's an english dub that's completely its own thing with its own jokes and it's incredibly self aware. I think a majority of English speakers that have seen it rather than the original version. I like it a lot more than the original version. It adds an extra layer of comedy to the whole film.

Except his movies are. I'm bilingual and I've seen both of the version, 90% of puns are lost in the dubs/subs.
It's not just about language, some of the puns you need to have been living in Hong Kong for years in order to understand.
>>
>>62736987
This. The dub is hilarious with the lip syncing.
>>
>>62737257
And again, puns make 10% of the movies, so I'm quite okay with not understanding them.
>>
>>62737257
Its okay. when you grow up you'll understand
>>
>>62737257
This. The dubs version are completely different things.
This is also proven by the fact that Kung Fu Hustle is considered to be funny here when it's considered to be one of he worst films and the start of his decline.

Dude... if you want a realistic movie, you will never find one... they're made for entertainment.

See a movie about superheroes? Oh man, don't get me started on how fake it is.

Robots? Bro.

Drifting? No, cars will tip over

War movies? No, the camera man would've died ages ago.

Any action movies? Main character dies during intro.
>>
>>62741146
dude, wtf are you even saying. that guy was admiring the blatant fanaticism of that era of action cinema. and saying that the camera man would've died in a war movie is the dumbest thing I've read all week, congratulations.
>>
I hate knowing that all the good Chinese movies are now classics... we don't even have good Chinese movies anymore, except Ip Man. Even Ip Man is getting worse and should stop already before it completely falls off and dies.

Hong Kong movie industry is a joke as well. Most of them are just seasonal movies with TVB actors/actresses. Some of them are just money-grabbing movies with hints of nudity (none included).

I watched plenty of Hong Kong movies back then with my brother... I cannot remember their names even if I want to rewatch them

IT HURTS

>>62741331
Oh god, don't remind me of Vegas to Macau... the cheesy ass CGI will NEVER replace practical and great cinematography.

People don't even try to make a good movie in China these days... we can really tell with our own eyes.

>>62741363
Chinese only... probably why it made a lot of money in China.
>>
Quick question; I haven't seen a Hong Kong movie / Chinese Movie since forever. Is there anything good that is between 2008-present?

I've seen Red Cliff and Ip Man. I speak canto and mandarin, so doesn't matter where its from as long as its GOOD.

I ran out of movies to watch lmao.
>>
King of Comedy of comedy gave me a lot of feels, but falls apart in the third act. good film to watch because it sort of is the transition from nonstop parody in his early films to the more play it straight at times in his later stuff.

>>
I'm pretty sure the reason why Hong Kong movies are terrible now is because of the budget and lack of audience (international audience).

However, I'm also pretty sure that you only need a great crew and cast to make a great movie with a 5 million dollar USD budget.

A 1 hour 30 minute movie that is shot extremely good and uses minimal CGI (they cost more than practical for my idea).

Imagine 10 people swat team that has been called to enter a forbidden factory, just to discover there are some kind of zombie inside. Yes, its cliche and yes, its zombies (boring now, right?). But no, if shot well enough, you will FEEL the suspense inside the factory. Also, if the cast acts well enough, you will feel among them.

I picture a dark factory and they are locked inside (they find out its some type of experiment so the factory is basically a simulation field with live humans) with no back-up coming.

But then in a nutshell, it just means the actors/actresses/directors/cinematographers/etc... in Hong Kong STINK right now.
>>
>>62741753
man not just movies
i love Wuxia and Wuxia tv series
they keep remaking Jin Yong novels and they are getting worse and worse. fucking million of cheap ass cgi, shitty actor/actress with just look and no acting skills, change the source material into nonsensical shit

Even the Koreans are better looking (subjective) and have better acting skills... fuck.

I prefer Lady Vengeance myself, Oldboy was the weakest in that trilogy imo. Memories of Murder, Mother, A Bittersweet Life, The Man From Nowhere, Oasis and many more are all better Korean films than Oldboy though.
