I prefer the theatrical cut, because it leaves the story more ambiguous. The relationship between Leon and Matilda is still uncomfortable, but it has an air of bizarre subtlety in the theatrical cut that is not in the uncut. Also, the grenade sequence in the uncut was too much to me, as it killed some of the stealth that goes along with Leon.

In the theatrical cut, Leon setting off the grenades is absolutely perfect because you don't see it coming. It's a final solution and like you said, it shows Leon's dedication to Matilda. The uncut version hurts it a bit, because you can see it coming from miles away.
