Rick and Morty are loose caricatures of Doc and Marty, but other than that it has nothing to do with Back to the Future.
The personal drama is a mix of ow-the-edge existential crises and cynical marital issues.
The show is genuinely great though. The backlash on /tv/ is just a reaction to reddit liking it, but that isn't a flaw with the show itself.
Also based Roiland goes to /co/ just to troll, so it's fair to say the show is more 4chan than reddit.

I'm pretty sure it was a joke referencing how long it took them to make season 2. They started writing season 3 a couple months ago, as soon as it was renewed. It'll probably be on in the summer.
