in film specifically acting is mostly about subtlety. you have to understand and convey your character's nuances, motives, etc. to create something believable.
take Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood - everything from how he talks to how he's dressed to how he walks tells a story about his character, when everything comes together you can see Daniel Plainview on your screen and he seems like a real person.
whereas if you look at Leo's performances, most of them come off like somebody trying to entertain their friends at a party

i was kidding, those are his worst movies, he's a splendid actor that has a vast array of furnished classics. There are two types of roles, the charismatic, requires natural sensibilities of the individual, charm, flair, etc. (ex. Washington, De Niro, Nicholson etc.), and there's the chameleon, requires a transformation into a character that is completely foreign to the character of the individual, (ex. DDL, Jhonny Depp, Gary Oldman, etc.) The actor fundamentally has one job, to make his character believable, that's it. The rest is writing you pleb.

People criticizing Denzel definitely hasn't seen Glory, Flight or Training Day, not that he deserves to be on the list, but he's definitely way above DiCaprio. I'd say he and Hanks are quite on par.
