Also a reminder that Simpsons didn't truly turn terrible after 9, it's really tolerable up until around season 13 or so. there are still some genuinely funny episodes from 11 and 12 but of course it's a mix between good Simpsons and zombie Simpsons.

I think out of all Simpsons episodes, none are more debatable than this one.
I mean as I understand it, it still has Klasky-Csupo animation which is a classic Simpsons staple, it's obviously not far enough to be zombie, but I've heard people argue it's not even transitional, it's like it's in its own little category.
I mean some of the jokes are good, it was a pretty memorable episode, but the plot is really fucking silly.

I personally think it was dreadful and didn't really go anywhere but it had some good jokes.

That's the problem with 8 and onwards, the episodes generally have a few good jokes and are watchable, the plots are just nonsensical, especially when contrasted with the original seasons where the characters at least had a shade of realism to them. Once you get past season 12 it starts to decline really really fast.
What does tv think about this episode?
I had low expectations being season 15 but it really had some top notch writing and the music is GOAT.

The joke is it doesn't even look like season 4, it looks like utter horseshit. They made a few weird jokes like this in that episode, like when Homer sees a switch with the words 'Reanimate' above it he shouts 'REANIMATE? THE ANIMATION LOOKS FINE NOW' while staring into the camera with his soulless digital eyes.
There was also another bit at the end with Kang and Kodos that infuriated me but I don't remember what it was.
At least the first segment was an honest representation of what the show has become, playing with the corpse of the Simpsons.
