The bulk of comedy films from the 80s and into the mid 90s is are all about slackers with zero real lives. They don't focus on a meaningless life and try to focus on the now.
of course it helps that in the films they all tend to have a ton of friend and or other random movie like +1 stuff.. As in being a horrible slacker is a lot better if you have a smoking hot magic genie for example.
