Strangely enough, it was the first Paranormal Activity and Sinister. They were the last films I remember watching that scared me.

I don't know why, but the only films I find scary, for the most part, are paranormal centered flicks. Even something like Grave Encounters.

Which is weird, because IRL I don't get spooped by this shit at all.

That movie scared the ever living shit out of me when I was 10~. I barely remember anything about it, but it fucked up most of my nights that year.

I'll post one that was extremely creepy, from [REC], but I'd like to know if any of you can recognize this one I'll describe.

I haven't seen the movie she's in (only saw a webm of her), but she looks like a banshee, floating through the air at a house at night. The house has no lights turned on and the scene takes place inside of it. The camera is fixed at a certain angle and you can barely see the room, but there are flashes of light, probably from a storm. There's nothing in the room at first, then there's a flash of light and you see some "dress", then it goes dark again, then another flash of light that reveals the banshee-looking thing.

I asked the anon that posted it where it was from, but he didn't know it at the time and I ended up not saving the webm... Does anyone have a clue?

Exorcist 3 isn't bad man.

It's a bit of a mess, but it sets up some genuinely bizarre and terrifying atmosphere.

But to answer your question...Pic related. Fucking abysmal movie. Complete trash. But a 10/10 scare scene (only borderline Jump Scare, I'll concede).

>>
>>62651835

Like most Stephen King films, the first 75% of the movie is good, but it falls apart at the end. Still, it's pretty worth it.

I feel like Stephen sometimes tries so hard for us to care about that characters he's going to kill, but often times he just fails.

The Mist did a pretty good job making me care about the old couple.

>>62651949

Fuck that movie...

Like, it sucks as a movie overall, but it does what I think more movies should do: Silent jump scares. Not something popping onto your screen or a loud noise to scare you.

Someone or something that the audience can see but the characters on screen can't. Because in the middle of the night, those are gonna be monsters you think about. The ones hiding and attacking when you AREN'T looking.

I'm not sure why that move would make it better. I find the meticulous, obsessive compilation of detail in Zodiac integral to the movie's brilliance as it makes the viewer become much like the investigators in the movie. I found the search in Zodiac made me more fascinated with the case than Memories of Murder did, but I think the movies have different aims in that regard. Anyway, both are fucking great movies, two of the best of the last decade easily.

There isn't a "design" that can be scary any more. You can add as much blood or gore as you want, it doesn't make it scary.

It makes it better because he can write his characters and plot to theme and create interesting set pieces and scenes based around what would work as a film, rather than having to be obedient to details. Of course, you're right in that Memories Of Murder essentially sits in the thriller genre while Zodiac is perhaps better described as a docu-drama.
>>
>>62652246
During the time, not as many horror movies like it existed and so many people saw it. People of our generation are much desensitized with other horror films that the Exorcist is pretty easy, though entertaining.

For them? It was a terror they hadn't experienced. Plus, a lot more people were far more religious during that time.

Ah I see what you mean. Yeah I think Memories of Murder is probably more emotionally resonant but I think the underlying idea of the desperate search for detail leading to nothing subbing in for the desperate search for meaning in life when all you're doing is circling around an unknowable abyss is more thematically resonant. Wow now I really just want to sit down and watch both of these movies back-to-back.

Kind of hard to be scared when nothing on screen seems real and reminds you of tween emo art. Soz brah.

Complaining about inappropriate and bad art and production design is no different to complaining about bad cinematography or acting.

(and Babadook certainly had some top tier bad acting to boot)

Exactly.

They put an outsize head sculpt of the young actress on some older dudes body (guess it would be illegal to use a boy), in an attempt to maintain the correct scale of a younger person's body and head.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) the attempt didn't quite make it, and looks really weird and creepy. Combined with the uncanny valley effect of the immobile mask, it's so wrong to the viewer's eye it tends to scare the shit out of them on the first viewing.

All this trouble just to give her a dick...they could've just used a prosthetic dong...

The Thing is full of amazingly bizarre imagery, but the only sequence that left me disturbed was from (the otherwise forgettable) sequel, when the mostly-human thing crawls on top of a guy & slowly absorbs him, and you can see his look of terror slowly turning to something inhuman as the two faces melt together.

I always interpreted the weird gait as her initially wanting to get down low so she can sprint at him at full force, but then realises he can see her, so she decides to (unsuccessfully) hide her intentions by only walking slowly pretending to not be a threat. It's the kind of thing that I interpret in my nightmares all the time - something incredibly hostile will slip up and make a mistake, reveal its motives to me and then continue acting as if I had not seen it, causing me to panic in sheer terror where both of us are thinking "did he just see that?"

the one example I can think of is a dream where I was in a room full of paintings and the paintings where alive and all talking to each other but went silent when I walked in the room and I met eyes with one and obviously saw him move, but then both of us acted like I hadn't seen it and there is a pregnant pause where both of us figure out whether to fight/flight
>>
