When working with harsher images, Korine allows the nauseating nature of the events within his films to appear within a reflective mode of image and sound quality but as the deceptive marketing of the film along with the equally deceptive and idealistic nature of spring break to the "21st century teen", both how the world is perceived within the film and how the film is widely perceived in the outside world slowly reveals itself to be the work of a facade.
That's not to say it's an entirely cynical film (it's the exact opposite) or that Korine is only interested in an "exploration of the american dream" (it's much more than that), I don't even think it exists to make a point, its genius is in its juxtaposition of form (mesmeric visuals, pounding electronic music, and elliptical editing) against the more atypical content and actions / incredible humanism of how Korine usually portrays the sub-cultures within his films.
There's no condemnation of his characters here, Korine isn't that boring, what he's made instead is something much more spiritual.
Products of a post-Y2K mindset with a dream of freedom, drifting in search of that ephemeral thrill or feeling of pleasure and not letting anything stop them in their way.
Their actions are objectionable (as with the actions of most Korine characters) but his casting of cute teen stars and placement within a world that feeds off of their exploitation allows the audience and side characters in the film a feeling of comfort or control before flipping the switch on their position as the exploited to slowly extract power from the situation and become the aggressor, dangerously doing what they want, when they want, because they can.
