That'd be Ingmar Bergman.
Kubrick was a master of insightful "smart" cinema that was accessible for plebs, and that takes a lot.

Scorsese is similar in this regard, although his film have become more conventional over time. Still, his earlier films like Alice, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull pushed boundaries.
